Will Ferrell Is The Latest Celebrity Heading To Netflix

No matter how you slice it, Netflix has become a major player in the world of movies and television. What started as a DVD rental service has turned into the world's biggest streaming service, offering a wide selection of movies and TV shows from other studios, but a deep catalog of original content as well. And as Netflix continues to churn out more original content, it draws in more celebrity talent to lead these projects. The latest star to join these ranks is Will Ferrell, who will lead the movie Eurovision.

As one might expect from the title, Deadline reports that Eurovision will be about the Eurovision Song Contest, the international TV song competition that began in Switzerland in 1956. During that first year, only seven West European Nations participated, but now there are over 40 nations involved, including Australia as a guest participant. No specific plot details for this Eurovision movie have been revealed yet, but in addition to starring and producing alongside Jessica Elbaum from Gary Sanchez Productions, Will Ferrell is writing the comedy with Andrew Steele. Adam McKay, a longtime collaborator of Ferrell's, will executive produce.

While the Eurovision Song Contest isn't as big of a deal in the United States, its popularity internationally could mean that this will be one of the more popular Netflix movies around the globe. While Netflix's movies have earned nearly as much positive reception overall as the platform's TV shows, it has become a haven for cinematic tales that might not have had much success in a traditional theatrical setting. Comedically speaking, actors like Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James and Rob Schneider have turned to Netflix in recent years for creative endeavors. As for Will Ferrell, he previously sang in Step Brothers and episodes of Saturday Night Live, so whatever Eurovision ends up being specifically about (I'm guessing Ferrell is playing the comical underdog who tries to win the competition even though no one believes he can), at least we won't have to worry about him not having the vocal chops.

In the meantime, 2018 has a few offerings for the Will Ferrell fans out there, coming off the heels of The House and Daddy's Home 2 last year. The most notable is Holmes And Watson, where he will play famed Arthur Conan Doyle creation Sherlock Holmes opposite his Step Brothers co-star John C. Reilly, who's playing Dr. John Watson. Ferrell also has the comedy-drama Zeroville coming up, which doesn't have a set release date yet. He also recently reprised Cord alongside Molly Shannon's Tish for HBO's coverage of the Royal Wedding.
