Final Ready Player One Trailer Plays Up The Treasure Hunt, Has The Best Effects Yet
The hook of the marketing for Ready Player One, so far, has leaned into the virtual reality world of the OASIS, a futuristic program that citizens can plug into and become anything that they want. Wanna be Batman? In the OASIS, you can be Batman. Those who read Ernie Cline's novel on which Steven Spielberg's latest is based, though, know that there's a treasure hunt propelling the action in Ready Player One, and that's at the forefront of this final trailer... the best trailer released by WB so far.
In the novel Ready Player One, the inventor of the OASIS, James Halliday, creates a game. Complete three of his most daunting challenges, and take ownership of the entire OASIS. It's basically Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with VR and more 80s pop-culture references than you can shake a Delorean at. It makes Steven Spielberg the ideal director to helm a movie like Ready Player One, because he's responsible for so many of the brilliant references that power the story in Ernie Cline's book. Which is why the T-Rex from Jurassic Park is trying to stomp on the Delorean from Back to the Future in that new trailer:
In addition to leaning into the treasure hunt that's vital to Ready Player One, this new trailer also benefits from improved special effects that fill in more gaps from the OASIS, and each crevice is filled with brilliant and beautiful nods to outstanding pop-culture milestones. For example, is Arnold Schwarzenegger's character from Last Action Hero, Jack Slater, shows up -- in any format -- in Ready Player One -- I will combust into a cloud of geek glee.
Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One plunges audiences into the OASIS, where protagonists Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) and Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) will race the clock to solve Halliday's puzzles, so that the influential computer program doesn't fall into the hands of the evil and vindictive Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn). Early word on the film is that it plugs seamlessly into the nostalgia that Spielberg helped create in outstanding, groundbreaking films like E.T., Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
