Marvel's Steven Broussard Talks Adding LGBTQ Characters

There are quite a few controversies and difficult conversations surrounding the world of Hollywood lately. Chief among them is the call for inclusion and on camera diversity, with whitewashing scandals, the #OscarsSoWhite campaign, and transgender representation all adding to the discussion. There has also been a call for more LGBT characters in major franchises and blockbusters, including Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latter has made steps forward with female heroes and more actors of color, but when will they bring queer characters into the behemoth shared universe? Marvel producer Stephen Broussard (Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange) recently spoke to this possibility, saying:

For sure, you will see that. I know it can be frustrating if you're part of a group that wants to see more representation and the answer is always 'stay tuned' - I can imagine that that's frustrating - but that is happening behind the scenes, you're going to be seeing that more and more. Representation across individual groups in the years ahead.

While vague and without a specific franchise or character to look out for, Stephen Broussard seems sure that the MCU will eventually including LGBT stories. Furthermore, he understands the frustration that certain Marvel fans and advocates are feeling about the lack of representation.

Stephen Broussard's comments to Den Of Geek prove one thing: that Marvel studios hears fan concerns, and is actively seeking ways to satiate the moviegoers who have spent the last decade seeing each new blockbuster. With Ant-Man and The Wasp marking Marvel's 20th blockbuster in theaters, the shared universe is going to have to find ways to keep the fandom's attention. And helping fans feel represented onscreen is certainly one solid strategy.

Marvel's willingness to adjust to the times can be seen through the choices made in the MCU's Phase Three. While the first two phases primarily focused on heroes who were both male and white, the most recent set of films have helped diversify the Marvel Shared Universe. Female characters are finally getting their time, with both Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel being named after their female protagonists. Meanwhile Black Panther featured the MCU's first black leading man, while also including a stunning cast of legendary actors of color, and Spider-Man: Homecoming featured a diverse cast that properly represented the melting pot of New York City.

Although the MCU hasn't contained any queer stories, that isn't to say that the first LGBT character isn't already in existence. There are only a handful of romantic plot lines in Phase Three, so there's no way of knowing the sexuality for the majority of the shared universe's characters. Thor: Ragnarok actress Tessa Thompson revealed she played Valkyrie as a queer woman, although it wasn't expressly mentioned during the threequel's runtime.

One Big Question About The OASIS We Wish Ready Player One Answered

Steven Spielberg is an unimpeachable legend of the science-fiction genre. The sheer awesomeness of Jurassic Park alone would make him a candidate for this stature, but then the man also has Close Encounters of The Third Kind, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Minority Report on his filmography. The man clearly knows how to weave a story with a futuristic/technological bent... but watching Ready Player One it's hard not to notice that he fails to do one thing that is really crucial to this kind of storytelling: he never actually gives audience a larger sense of the world in which the central narrative is taking place, or any idea of what normal life is like.

It should be recognized up-front that Ready Player One carries a whole ton of exposition in its first act -- so much so that it requires forced voiceover narration from Tye Sheridan's Wade Watts. There is a lot to quickly get across so that the audience can understand what's going on, from the history of James Halliday (Mark Rylance) and the OASIS, to the Easter egg hunt that has been in effect ever since Halliday's death. But when it comes to how all of this makes the movie's world different than our own, it falls short. Sure, Columbus, Ohio has become a hotspot in America, and that people of all ages are obsessed with the game, but the film lacks important context that is needed to give the story meaning and the protagonist depth.

Surprisingly, this issue could be identified as a problem born in the complications of adaptation, because all of these missing details are very much present in Ernest Cline's novel. While the movie version of Wade Watts is almost exclusively depicted as a "Gunter," using every waking moment searching for Halliday's three keys, the Ready Player One book offers much more to his everyday life. Instead of just having Sorrento casually mention that schools could be made to look like those in John Hughes movies, Wade actually attends classes; and he deals with personal complications like being so broke he can't actually travel off-world and explore the game like everyone else. Those elements are completely missing in the film, and they are problematic omissions.

The principal problem that emerges from the lack of world building is the fact that the setting of the Ready Player One movie feels entirely ordinary, and by extension doesn't really give the OASIS any kind of apparent significance. Sure, we're told that people go to school and work inside of the program, but it's the classic issue of telling instead of showing. With so much emphasis on Gunter activity and Planet Doom, there's very little in the movie that suggests it's the society-changing technology that it's supposed to be. Really, it just comes across as outrageously popular video game, which isn't really the point.

Not only is the OASIS diminished by the lacking background in Ready Player One, but Wade Watts is also severely undercut as a protagonist. As alluded to, the book paints the character as being incredibly poor, but able to succeed in the great Easter egg hunt because of his ingenuity and knowledge. The benefit of knowing who Wade is outside of the game gives us a reason to cheer him on as he's playing it. The movie basically removes half of this equation, though, and while you can still cheer on Wade because he clearly knows his stuff, his journey simply isn't as compelling because of the deleted conflict, and there's a degree of satisfaction removed from what he's ultimately able to accomplish.

It's been eight years since the last film in the long-running Predator franchise, but audiences finally return to the hunt this weekend with the release of The Predator. Shane Black's relaunch is the biggest new release this weekend and it has been tracking to have the best opening weekend in the franchise. The Predator got a head start on its box office run last night, making $2.5 million in Thursday night preview screenings.

The Predator now has $2.5 million in the bank ahead of what is forecasted to be a $25-$30 million weekend, according to Deadline. That should give The Predator a decent shot at snagging first place at the box office. For comparison, the similarly R-rated Alien: Covenant posted $4.2 million from preview screenings ahead of a $36 million weekend. The best opening for a film with the Predator in it was Alien Vs. Predator, which made $38.2 million when it debuted in 2004, although it is up for debate whether that really counts as a Predator film. The best debut for a proper Predator film was Predators, which made $24.7 million opening weekend, a number The Predator is tracking to beat.

In a contest of killing prowess, the Predator has no equal, but at the box office, The Predator will be facing some stiff competition for the #1 spot in the form of The Nun. The Conjuring Universe film overcame bad reviews to set a record for that franchise last weekend, and it is still looking strong this weekend. The Nun is tracking to make around $25 million in the next few days, but The Predator is projected to edge it out at the box office.

This weekend has no shortage of R-rated fare with White Boy Rick and A Simple Favor also debuting. White Boy Rick, the Matthew McConaughey film based on a true story, made $575K in preview screenings last night and is tracking at around $8-$10 million for the weekend. A Simple Favor boasts the best reviews of this weekend's new releases and made $900K in previews on its way to a weekend that should fall somewhere in the mid-teens.

Thursday night's $2.5 million isn't a bad start for The Predator, and if it lives up to the tracking, it will be well on its way to recouping its $88 million budget. That The Predator is looking to perform this well speaks to the nostalgia for the franchise and audience desire for this kind of movie. There are a lot of internal and external forces that you might think would make matters more difficult for The Predator's box office prospects but they do not appear to be doing so. The sex offender controversy that popped up last week has become a story around the film, and even ignoring that unfortunate situation, The Predator is not doing particularly well critically, sitting at 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, some people really dug it. There is also the fact the East Coast is dealing with Hurricane Florence, but it looks like The Predator doesn't mind a little rain.
