Why Netflix Is So Important To The Film Industry Right Now, According To Mutes Duncan Jones

Netflix has long been known as a disruptor in the entertainment world. The development of original content has upended many traditional ideas about film and television, with Duncan Jones' film Mute standing as one of the platform's most highly-anticipated upcoming releases. Much discussion has been had about the role of Netflix in the modern entertainment landscape, and according to Jones, Netflix is an essential tool because it has helped create a new landscape for mid-budget films like Mute. In a recent interview, the Moon director explained:

It's really, really hard. There used to be a time when middle-budget movies had support from the independent arms of the studios to make films in that $20 million to $40 million range. And that just disappeared. It's gone. Dead. So, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, these places have started to pick up the slack. And I'm incredibly grateful for that because, on a creative level, it's now an outlet for different kinds of movies to get made. So that's a huge 'pro' in the situation. The 'con' is you have to play by their rules. And as much as it hurts me sometimes to think, God, there's never going to be a big opening of this movie, we're never going to get the chance to show it on huge screens everywhere and do that side of it. There are not even going to be DVDs or Blu-rays. So that part of it is not ideal. But the benefits: if Netflix hadn't picked this up it wouldn't have gotten made. That's just the truth of the matter.

Hollywood has changed in recent years, and it's not nearly as common to see a movie made for a medium-sized budget as it used to be. In fact, if you look at some of the most successful films of the last few years, they often fall into the range of a massive blockbuster in the vein of Star Wars: The Last Jedi or they're movies made for incredibly small budgets, such as a horror movie like Get Out. Mid-range films don't get the kind of theatrical play that they used to, which is why streaming services have become so invaluable to directors like Duncan Jones who want to make a "creative" movie of that scale.

Despite the opportunities, Duncan Jones' comments about working with Netflix also highlight some of the drawbacks. A movie like Mute won't receive a home release push on Blu-ray, for example, and a Netflix release means that the bulk of audiences will see it on home screens instead of big screens. That said, Jones also made sure to note in his interview with Uproxx that a film like Mute would've never gotten made without a platform like Netflix, so the benefits likely outweigh some of the drawbacks.

Of course, to get a better sense of what makes a movie like Mute so risky, you should also know what it's about. Taking place in Berlin in the not-too-distant future, the film focuses on a mute man named Leo (Alexander Skarsgard) in a desperate search through the criminal underworld to find his missing girlfriend. The film appears to play like a neo-noir thriller in the vein of Blade Runner 2049, except it doesn't have a franchise name backing it up.

The Men In Black Spinoff Is Bringing Back An Original Trilogy Character

Rather than reboot the Men in Black film series following 2012's Men in Black 3, Sony Pictures opted to keep the next movie in the franchise set in the same continuity, just like how Universal spun Jurassic World out of the Jurassic Park trilogy. So in the Men in Black spinoff, Agent J and K's exploits all happened in the past, but until today, only new characters had been announced for the upcoming movie. However, it's now being reported that at least one familiar face will be present, as Emma Thompson is reprising Agent O.

Agent O was introduced in Men in Black 3 as the new chief of the Men in Black organization following Agent Zed's (Rip Torn) passing. After the timeline was changed by Boris the Animal, O was able to deduce from Will Smith's Agent J, who was the only person who retained memories of the original timeline, that there were temporal shenanigans afoot, and she pointed him in the right direction on how to go back in time to fix everything. While in 1969, J also encountered O's younger self, who was played by Alice Eve. Since specific plot details for Men in Black spinoff are still being kept under wraps, THR didn't provide any information on how O will fit into the movie, but presumably she's still the head honcho at MIB. Well, stateside at least, as Liam Neeson is reportedly playing the leader of MIB's U.K. division.

Since Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' time with the Men in Black franchise appears to be over (though perhaps that will change someday), Agent O makes the most sense to bring back for this spinoff (though I'm still crossing my fingers that the worm guys return). Assuming she's still leading MIB, then she's the best connective thread between the original trilogy and this new adventure, similar to how Dr. Henry Wu was used in Jurassic World. Emma Thompson's recent cinematic credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Meyerowitz Stories and The Children Act, while her other upcoming appearances include Johnny English Strikes Again, The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle and Late Night.

Along with the previously mentioned actors, the Men in Black spinoff stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall and Les Twins, a.k.a. Laurent and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois. The Fate of the Furious' F. Gary Gray is directing the spinoff, which is said to be more global in scale than its predecessors, and Iron Man duo Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penned the script.

Disneyland Is Moving Forward Fast With Marvel Land (Which Can't Actually Be Called Marvel Land)

Since the opening of Star Wars: Galaxys Edge, Disneyland has grown even more in popularity and visitor volume. Surprisingly, that was something that could actually happen at the West Coast park, and now it looks like Disney is about to have even more of a reason to let folks through its gates, as the planned Marvel Land is going forward at a bit of a faster pace.

However, there are some snags in the plan to bring the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Disneyland, and theyre pretty big hang-ups. For starters, it cant actually be called Marvel Land. And thats just the least of their worries, as theres an even greater restriction to how Disney Parks can actually sell this new attraction.

In addition to such a big restriction, Marvel actually cant have its name mentioned in the marketing campaign for this brand new section of the Disneys California Adventure theme park. Planned to open next year, this untitled section has already seen teases scattered throughout the section of the park that houses the current big Marvel attraction Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout!

The details pertaining to Disneys California Adventures new Marvel attraction are pretty spectacular, as while we dont have many ride details from The L.A. Times report on this new Disney park section, save for a Spider-Man themed adventure, other interesting features for this land have been revealed. For starters, the entire section of the park that will house this new project is about to get a pretty big overhaul -- including improved bathrooms, and a special meet-and-greet area where folks can meet their favorite licensing-approved Marvel Studios characters.

Perhaps the two most interesting features being built into this untitled Marvel section of Disneys California Adventure are a retail outlet thats apparently larger than the average home in the West, and a microbrewery. Since Disneyland has lifted its previous restrictions on alcohol in the park, this could now make it possible for someone to throw down an Asgardian ale, with the temptation to slam their flagon down and exclaim, Another! (But seriously, please dont do that.)

And yet with all of these special and exciting features in what most would want to call Marvel Land, theres just no way it can be called exactly that. Though there are pretty specific reasons for that wrinkle in the plan. Overall, it all boils down to preexisting agreements made between Marvel and theme park companies before their acquisition by Disney.

Theme park rights are a bit of a mixed bag, especially when it comes to Marvel. With the rights to certain characters in their lineup tied to Universals parks east of the Mississippi River, weve seen this sort of complication prevent characters like Iron Man, Spider-Man, or The Hulk appear at the Walt Disney World resort parks. Though since the Guardians of the Galaxy arent part of that deal, the East Coast contingent of Disney Parks empire has been working on its own attraction based on that comic crews misadventures, set to open at Epcot Center in 2021.

As we wait to learn the name of this new section of Disney real estate, thinking of all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe attractions that could be included is something most fans are going to be occupied with between now and the sections 2020 opening. Though we wont have to wait that long for confirmation, apparently, as this years D23 Expo in Anaheim should represent the next big step in unveiling the future of Marvels theme park endeavors.

So if you want to dream without the limits, youd better do it before the D23 Expos August 23-25 timeframe. And you can be sure that as soon as we have those details, well be breaking them on CinemaBlend the moment theyre out there.
