One Key Way Mortal Engines Is Changing From The Book, According To Peter Jackson

Mortal Engines is a film that has been in the works since 2009 -- and any movie developing for that long is going to go through some significant changes. Sure, the project is ultimately based on the novel source material by author Philip Reeve, but the feature has evolved like any story in order to make the best adaptation possible. Obsessive fans will surely notice the smaller alterations when the finished product is screened later this year, but it should be recognized there is one key difference that everyone can prepare for now: the main characters are significantly older. Or as producer/writer Peter Jackson puts it,

We've changed the book a bit in places. We've aged it up. The book is written for quite a young audience, to some degree, you know? And I just don't think anybody wants to see another teenage dystopian movie any time soon. So, it's one of the reasons why we've aged it sort of up, and we cast it a bit older. Tom and Hester in the book are younger... We had made it a little bit more adult.

In the books, first published in 2001, heroes Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw are written as teenage protagonists -- but because Hollywood has sufficiently driven teenager-led dystopian fiction into the ground, Mortal Engines decided to make an important change in that arena. Instead, the characters will be portrayed as (for lack of a better term) young adults, making the film more mature than its source material. So when you see the 30-year-old Robert Sheehan and Hera Hilmar playing those roles on the big screen later this year, don't be confused and think they are trying to appear half their age.

I actually learned about this significant change to Mortal Engines around this time last year, as I joined a small group of film journalists to visit the New Zealand set of project when production was still rolling. We had the pleasure of talking with the various members of the cast and crew over the duration of the trip, including a sit down with Peter Jackson. During that roundtable interview, he was asked if Philip Reeve suggested any changes to the material based on ideas he had writing the sequels -- and while Jackson said that wasn't the case, he did talk about some of the big ways the movie is different from the book.

After discussing the significant age changes, Peter Jackson then went on to talk about how the production has worked with Mortal Engines' author -- and he made it sound like Philip Reeve was very much kept in the look. Talking about the relationship, Jackson said,

In some respects it differs from the book in quite a few places, but not really [because Philip Reeve wanted to add something]. Although, Philip came out here, and we always send him script revisions as we do them, and he always seems to be very pleased with them. I think he, having written the four books that he did, he said that he wishes he could go back to the first one again and revise some parts of it - because you certainly see his confidence in the storytelling grows as these four books progress.

Directed by Christian Rivers, Mortal Engines is set in a world that has slowly rebuilt itself after nuclear war, with cities only able to survive by becoming mechanized and mobile -- devouring smaller cities/towns for resources and population growth. The story follows an apprentice historian named Tom (Robert Sheehan) as he gets caught up in an adventure with Hester (Hera Hilmar), a young woman who has learned a dark secret and is on a mission for revenge against one of society's most powerful figures, Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving).

We still have a while to wait for the arrival of Mortal Engines, with Universal scheduling it for release on December 14th -- but stay tuned to CinemaBlend between now and then for a whole lot more of our set visit coverage!

Matthew McConaughey Was Having A Great Time With Rom-Coms When They Almost Ruined His Career

Matthew McConaughey Was Having A Great Time With Rom-Coms When They Almost Ruined His Career

Few actors have had as versatile of a career as Matthew McConaughey has. The 48-year-old Texas native's various roles have included a fugitive, stripper, beetle, astronaut and AIDS victim. There once was a time when romantic comedy leading man was his predominant title, and when asked about it years later, the actor still thinks fondly on his heartthrob days. In his words:

It was fun, it was great pay and I learned that, you know what, these are not the type of movies to dig deep [within one's own experience]. They were 'Saturday characters.' I remember saying, 'I'm gonna give myself another Saturday!' They were fun. The pay was great. I was looking forward to them. I enjoyed going to work... I was also living on a beach and going out without my shirt on, just like I did before I was famous. I was living a romantic comedy.

Not bad, Matthew McConaughey. It sounds like that era was as picture perfect for him as one might think! After the actor found his breakout role in Dazed and Confused in 1993, the actor consistently found a place on the big screen, working with a number of masterful directors early in his career including Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and Ron Howard. When he signed on to 2001's The Wedding Planner alongside Jennifer Lopez, it was the beginning of a particular era full of rom-coms that he suddenly became best known for.

These movies, such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, didn't have the actor complaining. These were his bachelor days, the money was rolling in and he enjoyed what he was doing. In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matthew McConaughey said his perspective changed after he married his wife Camila Alves and had his first child in 2008. He continued with:

I did become conscious of it. It looked like that's what I was doing 24/7. So I was like, 'I'm not gonna feed that.' My life was becoming very vital and exciting and dreams were coming true and things were new and scary and wow. Then I looked at my career and I was like, 'Eh, doesn't seem as exciting, doesn't seem as fresh, doesn't seem as dangerous. I feel like I'm loving harder and laughing harder and crying harder in real life than I'm getting to do in my work.

The actor wanted to break out from the "guy gets the girl" story he had explored time and time again for the decade. He said he "unbranded" and deliberately started turning down all he was being offered, more rom-coms and action comedies. He didn't return to the big screen until 2011 for The Lincoln Lawyer, thus beginning his career comeback, the "McConaissance." He did a string of indie hits, Killer Joe, The Paperboy and Mud, before strutting into his most highly-acclaimed works Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street and HBO's True Detective. His most celebrated era ended with his Best Actor Oscar win as a 47-pound lighter man dying from AIDS in Buyers Club.

Everyone loves a comeback story, and while in Matthew McConaughey's case, he could have likely thrived where he was for quite some time, he didn't allow himself be complacent in where he was. He didn't and his career has benefitted ten-fold from it. Since his Oscar win, the actor has had a few bumps in the road with some recent box office bombs, but he's now back in conversation with his recent performance in White Boy Rick. The actor certainly has held our attention over his 25-year career and may have more tricks in the bag we have yet to see.

Why Thanos Didn't Kill All The Avengers In Wakanda

Why Thanos Didn't Kill All The Avengers In Wakanda

Even if he's just relying on his own natural abilities, Thanos is one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throw the Infinity Stones into the equation, and he unquestionably becomes Powerhouse #1 in this franchise, hence why he was able to able to take out the heroes in Wakanda at the end of Avengers: Infinity War without breaking a sweat. However, you probably noticed that Thanos didn't go out of his way to kill all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and that's because as he came came closer to accomplishing his goal, he was less concerned with taking lethal measures with his opponents. According to Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding:

The plan of getting all the Infinity Stones is putting [Thanos] in the position of being so powerful that he is sort of calmer, more single-minded, and more reasonable. He is not necessarily worried about killing the heroes. As long as he ends up with the stones, he can accomplish what he wants to.

It's ironic that for a warlord so determined to eliminate half of all life in the universe, Thanos didn't feel the need to snuff out most of Earth's Mightiest Heroes when Avengers: Infinity War was wrapping. But, as Ryan Meinerding pointed out in the book The Art of Avengers: Infinity War (via Screen Rant), by that point in the movie, with five Infinity Stones in the Infinity Gauntlet, he didn't feel the need to snuff the life out of them. Getting that last Infinity Stone was all that mattered.

At this point in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos likely looked at the heroes standing in his way like ants to be swept away. Just look at how he toyed with Captain America. Thanos could have incinerated Steve Rogers in an instant, but instead he kept pressing down on the hero, curious to see how long Steve could hold back his hand and then taking him out with a swift punch to the face

The big exception to Thanos' no-killing approach on Earth, of course, was Vision, everyone's favorite multi-colored, British android. Thanos' minions tried their best to take the Mind Stone from Vision, but as the old saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself. Scarlet Witch succeeded in destroying the Mind Stone, but thanks to recently acquiring the Time Stone, Thanos easily reversed Scarlet Witch destroying the Time Stone and pulled it from Vision's head, leaving his now-gray corpse behind.

Of course, all of Thanos' efforts in Avengers: Infinity War were to bring forth death, in a matter of speaking. Having seen overpopulation destroy his homeworld Titan, Thanos set forth to eliminate half of all life in the universe in order to prolong available resources and achieve true balance. With the six Infinity Stones, he was finally able to accomplish that and retire on a serene planet afterwards.

We first met the MCU's version of Thanos in The Avengers mid-credits scene when he smirked at the camera after his minion, The Other, warned that to battle the Avengers would be to court death itself (alas, we won't be seeing this version of the Mad Titan professing his love for the personified Death). Thanos briefly returned in Guardians of the Galaxy to berate Ronan, who he'd tasked with finding the Power Stone, but that appearance was also basically just a cameo. Still, there was definitely a sense that Thanos was not someone to be trifled with.

It was in Avengers: Infinity War that we finally saw firsthand was he was capable of, and he certainly had no problem leaving death and destruction in his wake early on. The movie opened with the half of the survivors from Asgard dead at his and the Black Order's hand (Loki and Heimdall included), and we learned later from Thor that the Mad Titan ravaged Xandar to obtain the Power Stone. When you're starting your Infinity Stones quest, drastic measures are required.

Let's also not forget that to add the Soul Stone to his collection, Thanos had to kill Gamora, his "favorite daughter." As the Red Skull revealed, the Soul Stone can only be retrieved by someone sacrificing something they love, and contrary to Gamora's belief, Thanos truly did love her, albeit in a twisted way. Pushing Gamora off a cliff earned the antagonist one orange rock.

By the time Thanos arrived on Titan to fight Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis and Nebula, he'd fallen into a more calmed state, though he wasn't quite invincible yet. The heroes nearly succeeded in overwhelming him and pulling the Infinity Gauntlet, but once Star-Lord went off book after learning Gamora was dead, everything went to hell. Thanos did threaten to kill Iron Man, but that was only so Doctor Strange would hand over the Time Stone.

As things stand now, Thanos is enjoying his retirement and presumably not interested in battling superheroes anymore. And even though the Infinity Gauntlet was damaged after he snapped his fingers and carried out genocide, the Infinity Stones appear to still be intact, thus making him still the most powerful being in the universe. But he can't fully relax just yet.

It's expected that the surviving heroes will somehow reverse Thanos' action in Avengers 4 and bring back the people that he turned to dust (well, the heroes, at least). How they'll do that remains unclear, but with Josh Brolin confirmed to be reprising the Mad Titan in the Phase 3 capper, one can assume that eventually he'll be drawn back into action and do whatever is necessary to make sure his will on reality isn't changed. Maybe now he'll be willing to take a permanent course of action towards those still opposing him.

Avengers 4 opens in theaters on May 3, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. In the meantime, look through our Marvel movies guide to learn what else the superhero franchise has in development, or you can check out our 2019 release schedule to see what non-Marvel Cinematic offerings come out next year.
