Vulko: What You Need To Know About Willem Dafoes Aquaman Character

We're a little over a month until Aquaman finally dives into theaters, and DC and Warner Bros's marketing for the movie has done a good job of establishing most of the movie's main players. But one character who hasn't gotten that much attention is Willem Dafoe's Nuidis Vulko. While Dafoe's involvement in Aquaman has been public knowledge for a long time, it was only until recently that we got a good look at the DC Extended Universe's version of Vulko, and the final Aquaman trailer that dropped today provided the first up-close footage of the character. Now that Vulko has been properly "introduced," it's a good time to go over who he is and why he's important to the Aquaman mythology.

Created by Bob Haney and Howard Purcell, Nuidis Vulko was introduced in 1967's The Brave and the Bold #73 as Atlantis' chief scientific adviser and arguably its most famous political figure outside of the monarchs themselves. In the pre-New 52 continuity, Vulko met Aquaman, a.k.a. Arthur Curry while they were both being held in an Atlantean prison, although Vulko had known Arthur's mother, Atlanna. When the two men escaped imprisonment and Arthur took the Atlantean throne, he made Vulko his regent.

Among Vulko's notable acts during his first couple decades of existence included helping Aquaman and The Atom repel microscopic invaders coming from a single droplet of water, ruling over Atlantis for a time and outfitting a harpoon to replace Aquaman's missing hand, which had been bitten off by piranhas. But Vulko wasn't always by Arthur Curry's side. At one point he abandoned the king and joined an underground city, though he eventually returned. Then during the Obsidian Age, when all of Atlantis was transported back in time thousands of years, the continent was subsequently raised and sunk again, and then taken over Gamemnae, Vulko was among the individuals who sentenced Aquaman to die.

The pre-New 52 Nuidis Vulko died when The Spectre, God's spirit of vengeance, destroyed Atlantis and most of its citizens while he was temporarily unhinged and convinced all sources of magic needed to be eliminated, including Atlantean sorcerers. However, the ghost of Vulko later became a mentor to the second Aquaman, Arthur Joseph Curry (similar name as his predecessor, but definitely a different individual). Once the New 52 rebooted the DC universe in 2011, not only was Vulko restored to life (and made younger), he became a significantly more important character in Aquaman's life.

In this continuity, like his earlier iteration, Nuidis Vulko was Atlantis' chief scientific adviser, only when he failed to prove that Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master, Arthur Curry's half-brother, killed his mother, he was forced to flee Atlantis before Orm's loyalists could arrest him. Vulko subsequently began a new life in Norway, but years later, he was found by a young Arthur Curry, who'd been raised on the surface and was now interested in learning about his Atlantean heritage.

Thanks to Vulko, Arthur Curry visited Atlantis, learned about its history and discovered that he was the first-born to Queen Atlanna, thus making him the rightful heir to the Atlantean throne. Vulko was rather insistent that Arthur become Atlantis' king, as he feared Orm would lead the underwater nation to ruin, but instead, Arthur left Orm in charge, provided that he didn't invade the surface.

Now here's where things get interesting, and quite possibly could foreshadow what's in store for Willem Dafoe's Vulko in the Aquaman movie. During the Throne of Atlantis crossover storyline, Orm declared war on humanity after the missiles aboard a United States nuclear submarine malfunctioned and were launched at Atlantis. Using Atlantean technology, Orm and his followers then flooded many of the United States' biggest cities and invaded. Vulko jumped into action and helped Aquaman and the Justice League, but we later learned that he was the one who instigated this war between Atlantis and the surface.

Having grown tired of his life of exile and wanting Arthur to finally become king of Atlantis, Vulko engineered this conflict so that Arthur would have no choice but to overthrow Orm, even going so far as to use the Scepter of the Dead King (which he'd hired Black Manta to steal) to control the monstrous Trench and bring them into this mess. Vulko's plan worked, as Arthur did indeed defeat Orm and take back the throne, though he dragged Vulko back to Atlantis and threw him in a prison cell for his crimes. Since then, while Vulko keeps insisting that he's looking out for Arthur's best interests and remains loyal to him, Arthur is still distrustful towards his former ally, seeing him as nothing more than a shrewd political manipulator.

Which brings us to Willem Dafoe's Nuidis Vulko, who was originally supposed to be introduced in Justice League last year, but had his scenes cut out. As seen in the trailer, Vulko helped the young Arthur Curry channel his special abilities and train in Atlantean combat. Director James Wan said back in July that he sees Vulko as having a Mr. Miyagi/Daniel LaRusso or Obi-Wan Kenobi/Luke Skywalker relationship with Arthur.

Aside from being one of Arthur Curry's allies, we don't really know what to expect from Nuidis Vulko in Aquaman, although given his comic book history, I can't help but wonder if he's a secret threat. Ocean Master is Aquaman's main villain and Black Manta the secondary antagonist, but what if Willem Dafoe's Vulko has worked behind the scenes and is ultimately responsible for the events unfolding the way they do. Like his comic book counterpart, Vulko's actions would presumably, in his eyes, help Arthur in the long run, although since they would also result in countless casualties, you can bet our intrepid superhero would not be on board with Vulko's schemes.

On the other hand, maybe Aquaman is going in a different direction with Vulko. Maybe he is a legitimate ally to Arthur Curry through the entirety of the movie, or maybe he's a full-blown villain, and the reason he wants Arthur to recover that trident is so he can deliver it to Orm, as Vulko, for whatever reason, no longer sees Arthur as capable of effectively ruling Atlantis. With so little footage of him to work off of, it's hard to say one way or the other, but I doesn't look like we have to worry about Vulko not getting that much screen time.

The Purge Creator Already Has An Idea For The Film Series Ending

While certain franchises can be stretched out for as long as necessary (I'm looking at you, Star Wars), others have an expiration date. It turns out that The Purge, one of the defining horror film series of this decade, falls into the latter category, as creator James DeMonaco has already given thought into how he can wrap up this dystopic saga in one last movie. Speaking about the next cinematic Purge entry, DeMonaco said:

I have it in my head. I think I'm going to write it. I think it's a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I'm very excited. When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home.

The first Purge movie only came out five years ago, and given how long franchises like Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street have lasted, you wouldn't be faulted for thinking that The Purge series could at least hit the decade milestone, if not go longer. But evidently James DeMonaco is already mulling over how to wrap things up, as he informed EW. While there's no inkling yet of when the next Purge movie will be released, make peace with the fact that it will mark the conclusion of this franchise. Well, unless someone decides to reboot it a decade or two later, that is.

Although the Purge movies have earned mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, the film series has done quite well commercially, collecting over $457 million worldwide. With numbers like that, one could definitely imagine the this franchise going on for longer, but I also don't blame James DeMonaco for not wanting to overstay the welcome. As we've seen with many franchises, taking that approach can often taint the overall legacy.

The Purge series launched in 2013 with, you guessed it, The Purge. Starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, the first movie introduced us to this alternate version of the United States, which is ruled by the New Founding Fathers of America (NFAA) and where for one 12-hour period each year, all crime is legal, including murder. As a result, the country's economy has strengthened and unemployment has dropped to 1%, but with emergency services unavailable during this time, it's up to each citizen to stay alive until this chaotic event is over.

Just one year later, The Purge: Anarchy followed, this one introducing us to Frank Grillo's Leo Barnes and taking the action out into the depths of Los Angeles rather than keeping the action in just one location. This sequel also showed that the Purge event is used by the wealthy to specifically eliminate America's poor population.

2016's The Purge: Election Year saw Leo returning to protect Senator Charlie Roan, who's running for president and wants to overturn the Purge. Despite being targeted by the NFAA, (spoiler alert) Roan managed to survive that year's Purge, win the presidential election and it was implied that soon the Purge would be no more.

You'd think that with an ending like that, Election Year could have been the final Purge movie. And as far as the present day timeline of this franchise, perhaps it still is truly the end. But earlier this year, the franchise wound the clock back to the first Purge in, well, The First Purge. This was the first of the series not to be directed by James DeMonaco, though he still wrote the script. Gerard McMurray sat in the director's chair instead.

In The First Purge, we watched the NFFA testing the Purge in Staten Island and monitoring the results from afar. Needless to say that things got quite out of hand, but it didn't matter, because the event was deemed a success. By the next year, the Purge would be rolled out nationwide, laying the groundwork for the previous three movies.

I'd be remiss if I also didn't mention that the Purge franchise is now no longer limited to the big screen. The Purge TV series premiered on the USA Network September 4 and the season finale drops on November 6. Here's what showrunner Tom Kelly previously said on how the show differentiates itself from the movies:

I watched some of the movies, and what I liked about it was, it's this great concept that sort of puts the audience in that position [of] 'What would you do?' . . . And for me, we wanted to do the show to take it past the movies. As James would say it, the movies are like ten minutes of character and 80 minutes of 'Will they survive the night?' In a ten-hour format, we get to do much more. We really get to delve into character. And one of the ways we do that is through flashbacks. We don't just see our characters on the night of. We get to learn about them and see what in their life led them to their decisions that they're going to make on the night of. So it's been kinda great to dig into character the way the movies aren't afforded the time to do.

There's no word yet on if The Purge TV series will get a Season 2, although it did, the show would take the anthology route, meaning new characters and stories would be brought in. Still, if the Purge film series does end, the TV show could conceivably keep going and provide viewers deeper insight into this unsettling world.

As for the final Purge movie that James DeMonaco is kicking around, that hasn't gotten an official green light yet. Still, given how much money this series has brought in for Blumhouse, it's likelier than not that the production company would give Monaco the opportunity to properly finish things rather than just leave The First Purge as the final installment.

There are few franchises quite as popular as Star Wars. Because the property has spanned decades and generations, OG fans have introduced the Star Wars franchise to their kids and grandchildren. While Disney may be producing thrilling new installments to the galaxy far, far away, there's nothing quite like the original trilogy. George Lucas' original set of films came to a head with Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, uniting the characters in one final battle against the Galactic Empire and the Dark Side. Jedi begins with the rescue mission for Han at Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine, and it turns out that a seriously cringe worthy blooper happened due to the character's puppet. As Star Wars puppet master Dave Barclay recently told it,

One afternoon when we were working on Jabba, Princess Leia in the slave costume was lying against Jabba. And so the director said to me 'David, would you put your hand on Carrie's shoulder?' I said Ok. I was looking at these tiny little monitors and really couldn't see much at all. I reposition my body on the Jabba torso, reach down and put my hand on a shoulder. And then she said, 'Jabba, that's not my shoulder.' I think it's the only time Jabba blushed.

While many fanboys have fantasized about Leia and her gold bikini in Return of the Jedi, it looks like one Star Wars member of the crew got to get cozy with the legendary actress. It just happened to be totally accidental and through a disgusting Hutt puppet.

Dave Barclay's comments come from his recent appearance on Great Big Story, detailing his long career as a puppeteer. Barclay worked on both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, although his work in movie puppets certainly hasn't slowed. Barclay was also seen in the most recent Muppets movies, and Where the Wild Things Are. Plus he helped out with the cult classic classic Labyrinth, so obviously he has a good working relationship with the Jim Henson Company.

It's somewhat fitting that the Jabba puppet accidentally grabbed the wrong part of Carrie Fisher while filming. The drooling villain is loathed by Leia during their time together, where he forces her into the iconic gold bikini. Eventually the heroine gets the upper hand, and manages to strangle Jabba to death while the rest of the group saved Luke and Han from being thrown into the Sarlacc pit.

Leia's slave costume is one that hasn't really aged well, with many taking umbrage with its depiction through a modern lens. As such, merchandise containing that outfit are being produced less, although the great Carrie Fisher seemed to have a great sense of humor about the bikini in her final years.
