Looks Like Dark Phoenix Might Have The Smallest Opening Of The X-Men Franchise

As the final entry in the recent run of X-Men films, Dark Phoenix has been an interesting case study when it comes to what sort of opening to expect. With several release date bumps to the films name, its hard to tell if Fox is being protective of the films chances in theaters, or if theyre just trying to find a good spot for it to take its lumps and move on.

In either case, it looks like we have our first big indicator of whether Dark Phoenix will rise from the ashes, or be reduced to embers. The opening weekend for the film is estimated to land between $40 55 million, and if this holds, theres a good chance that director Simon Kinbergs film will have the smallest opening of the entire X-Men franchise.

Spanning back to the year 2000, the X-Men series has had peaks and troughs when mapping its box office history. Starting with $54.5 million opening in the first July of this millennium, the series would climb to its highest opening ever with 2006s X-Men: The Last Stand, which weighed in with a $102.7 mil opening.

Before these estimates for Dark Phoenix came in pegging the film with a $40 55 million range, the low water mark stood at 2011s X-Men: First Class, which brought in $55.1 million in one of the few openings in the franchise taking place outside of its typical May time frame.

So in order to avoid this outcome, Dark Phoenix needs to not only stay on the high end of the opening range estimated by Box Office Pro, it needs to bury the needle and go above and beyond those numbers. It wouldnt have to be a huge jump past the high water mark, but the more it can surpass these numbers, the better Dark Phoenixs chances would be of recouping its rumored budget. Though the whispers of a monetary spend upwards of $200 million dont exactly bode well.

Counter to the typical picture of comic book box office success, the X-Men series has been less consistent in its increases, but more consistent in its cyclical nature. Looking at the pattern as it stands, Dark Phoenixs intended end of the current phase of mutant powered films couldnt have come at a better time.

Should this new crater in the X-Men box office time line occur, there is a silver lining thats currently presented as a con. Thered be nowhere to go but up when the X-Men franchise eventually makes to return to the box office as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Revitalizing this classic fan favorite property, with the hype of a fresh MCU coat of paint, is exactly the blockbuster that everyone will be waiting for.

For now though, well have to wait and see if Dark Phoenix makes or breaks this round of fate in the X-Men universe, and if that final impressive trailer makes any difference in the matter, when the movie debuts on June 7th.

Why Deadpool 2 Is Winning The Summer Movie Marketing Game

With Deadpool 2 only a mere two weeks away, the summer movie season is about to heat up to full steam. That, in part, is due to some serious legwork that the folks in Fox's marketing department have been doing in order to push the upcoming sequel to one of 2016's record breaking hits. But to have Avengers: Infinity War wiping the floor with the competition, just weeks before its sequel's debut, the stakes are undoubtedly raised. The best part about that is Deadpool 2 is rising to meet them, thanks to its killer marketing campaign.

After a campaign that's given us everything from a sassy pre-movie short in front of Logan to a teaser trailer hidden in a Bob Ross parody, Deadpool 2 seemed on track to make itself a sequel that, at the very least, matched its predecessor in style and humor. As time went on, though, the marketing got nuttier, and it did so in some of the funniest ways. Be it a Good Housekeeping spread, those Trolli gummy hands that recently hit shelves, and above all else, a Celine Dion single and music video, Deadpool 2 is slaying the competition with its sales driven prowess. Which would lead even the most breathless Wade Wilson fan to ask, under their breath, "How the fuck do they do it?"

Frankly, the key to Deadpool 2's marketing is the same piece of advice that high powered operators like to give some of their client's press handlers: they're letting Deadpool be Deadpool. Rather than play it safe with just the run-of-the-mill promotions that the Fox/Marvel's brainchild began with, they're dipping into some interesting tricks that used to be handy back in the 1980s and 1990s era of film marketing. You have to admit, when your character dances in heels as Celine belts out the film's uber-serious ballad, "Ashes," and when they make fun of their ability to regenerate their own hands with a creepy gummy candy, it feels like the days when Freddy Krueger had a cereal and Jurassic Park doled out Pogs. That sort of nostalgia draws in audience members that are all about it, in addition to people who can laugh at how much those practices ridicule such measures in the first place. Seriously, watch the video, and tell us it doesn't take you back to the days of Aerosmith singing underneath a gigantic space shuttle.

Though the Deadpool 2 marketing strategy isn't just to bring back the past in a bid for post-modern laughs. As a matter of fact, there's another weapon that the David Leitch directed follow-up has up its sleeve, and his name is Peter. The non-superpowered member of DP's X-Force, the character played by Catastrophe's Rob Delaney is a sort of deadpanned straight man that sticks out like a sore thumb among a team that has mutant abilities out the wazoo. His earnest nature, and the fact that he was brought onto the team merely by "seeing the ad" give the film another catchphrase, yet another character to center posters around, and a new Twitter feed for us all to follow. Put all of the steps above together, and what do you get? A memorable experience that keeps hungry fans fed until the main course is unveiled in a little over a week.

Of course, some fans will be seeing the film a little earlier, as fan screenings will be dropping all over pretty soon. That's just the cherry on the top of the Deadpool 2 marketing sundae, as Fox is assuredly hoping to score the biggest endorsement deal that the would-be franchise bearer could get: very strong word of mouth from already pleased fans. We're entering the final stages of this marketing campaign's madness, and if this extremely amusing show so far has taught us anything, it's that Deadpool 2 may have saved its craziest, most memorable stunts for last -- and we're all in on whatever comes next.

Sony's experiments with Venom over the years have been... interesting. By all accounts, the alien symbiote was forced on Sam Raimi for the ill-fated Spider-Man 3, miscasting Topher Grace as a smarmy Eddie Brock and relying on practical effects to create Venom's signature suit. And now that the studio is trying to bring Venom back to the big screen in a solo origin story, behind-the-scenes business deals mean they need to do so without the assistance of Venom's true rival, Spider-Man.

Back in 2015, director David Sandberg (not to be confused with Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg) released the short film Kung Fury, which at its core was a love letter to 1980s martial arts and action movies. Made off a $630,000 budget, the 31-minute Kung Fury was met with a lot of positive reviews and continues to enjoyed on several digital platforms, but we'll soon be returning to this world for a feature-length sequel. It was announced earlier this week that Michael Fassbender will lead a Kung Fury movie, and now word has come in that he'll be joined by one of the most popular action stars of the '80s and '90s: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After completing his two terms as California's governor in 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the world of acting, appearing in movies like Terminator Genisys, The Last Stand, Escape Plan and the Expendables entries. Now he'll be adding Kung Fury to his list of action-related credits, as it was announced that he'll co-star alongside Michael Fassbender and David Hasselhoff, the latter of whom appeared in the original short film. In addition to producing the Kung Fury movie through his Laser Unicorns banner, David Sandberg will also be appearing on camera to reprise the eponymous protagonist. While the official announcement of Schwarzenegger's casting didn't identity the actor's Kung Fury character, THR has heard that he'll be playing the President of the United States.

Set in an alternate 1985, Kung Fury follows the hero of the same name, who keeps the streets of Miami safe by leading the Thundercops. This elite police force's members have been assembled from all across history to defeat the evil Kung Fuhrer, Adolph Hitler. However, after one of the Thundercops falls in the line of duty, a new villain emerges to assist the Kung Fuhrer in obtaining the ultimate weapon. With no other options left, Kung Fury will have to travel across time and space to save his allies, defend the Miami Kung Fu Academy and wipe our the forces of evil for good. Assuming that Arnold Schwarzenegger's President isn't corrupt and working with the Kung Fuhrer or this mysterious enemy, ideally that means that he'll be Kung Fury's ally, presumably giving the main hero his orders or something along those lines. David Hasselhoff will likely be voicing the Hoff 9000 again, but it remains to be seen how Michael Fassbender's character fits into the story.
