No, Marvel's Kevin Feige Isn't Joining Lucasfilm

There have recently been rumors that Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm and the overseer of the new wave of Star Wars movies, will be stepping down from her position in the fall. The rumors claim that Disney is unhappy with Kennedy's handling of the franchise, which, despite epic box offices numbers, have been subject to numerous behind-the-scenes troubles and expensive reshoots. Of the people who could replace her, Kevin Feige is perhaps the biggest name. However, Feige has officially gone on the record to deny any truth to these rumors. Here's his matter-of-fact answer on whether he will be taking over Star Wars:

At this point, there's no need to list the accomplishments of Kevin Feige. His hugely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe changed modern blockbusters forever, and has made billions of box office dollars over the past decade. While not solely responsible, Feige is a big part of why the MCU has continued to be a powerhouse player, even has the 20th movie in the series, Ant-Man and the Wasp, heads to theaters next week. Given all of this, it's easy to see why Feige would be the logical choice to take over Star Wars from Kathleen Kennedy. Not only does he know his way around a shared universe, but Feige is a big Star Wars geek, but it sounds like he'd rather stay a fan than be the man in charge.

/Film asked Feige point blank if he was going to be involved with Star Wars, and the answer leaves very little up for interpretation. Even though Feige's contract with Marvel is up this year, leaving his future a massive question mark (he can literally go do whatever he wants), making Star Wars movies is just not on the table at this point.

It's important to remember that the rumors of Kathleen Kennedy's departure are just that: rumors. There might not be anything for Feige to take over. No one from Lucasfilm or Disney has made any indication that they are unhappy with Kennedy's leadership. Even though Star Wars has had some trouble with their solo films and hires like Gareth Edwards, Josh Trank, Chris Lord and Phil Miller, and Colin Trevorrow have all had issues in some way, Kennedy is still the acting president of the studio. All that being said, just because Feige has no interest in taking over Star Wars doesn't mean that Kennedy isn't leaving.

Two More Marvel Characters Reportedly Survived Thanos Snap

With the snap of his Infinity Gauntleted fingers, Thanos changed the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an instant. Thanks to the power of the six Infinity Stones, he was finally able to bring forth his vision of true balance in the universe at the end of Avengers: Infinity War by wiping out half of all life, and the surviving half must now adapt with a radically-altered reality. Apparently we can count Stellan Skarsgrd's Dr. Erik Selvig and Kat Dennings' Darcy Lewis, two of Thor's allies, among these lucky survivors.

Avengers: Infinity War came out in theaters seven months ago and has been available on home media for nearly four full months, but the events of that movie are still heavily looming in Marvel fans' minds, and a new book, titled Avengers: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, will give them a look into life after the Thanos snap. The book follows Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis trying to find and understand the cause of this genocide, which will take them on a journey to learn about the Infinity Stones. Unfortunately for them, a new foe who "threatens to destroy them all is looming," because of course there is. Why should their investigation into these powerful artifacts be easy?

This is the third Avengers: Infinity War tie-in book to be released this year, following Thanos: Titan Consumed, which explored the purple warlord's origins, and The Cosmic Quest Volume One: Beginnings, which followed The Collector getting his bearings following his run-in with the Guardians of the Galaxy and dealing with his brother, The Grandmaster, after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. It is important to note, however, that Thanos: Titan Consumed was clarified to be non-canon within the MCU despite being a tie-in. Maybe that's not the case with The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, but unless Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis appear in Avengers 4 intact, we won't know for sure whether they are indeed still alive in the official MCU timeline.

We know for a fact that Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, a Hulk-less Bruce Banner, Black Widow, War Machine, Rocket Raccoon, Nebula, Okoye and M'Baku made it out of Avengers: Infinity War alive, as did Ant-Man, which was revealed in the Ant-Man and the Wasp mid-credits scene. Hawkeye and Captain Marvel also survived since they're important players in Avengers 4, and characters like Shuri and Pepper Potts are confirmed to be showing up through interviews or behind-the-scenes leaks. But there are still plenty of other supporting MCU characters whose fates remain a mystery, though for now, you're welcome to assume Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis aren't dust.

Erik and Darcy both debuted in 2011's Thor alongside Natalie Portman's Dr. Jane Foster. The trio were in New Mexico doing astrophysics research when they stumbled across a powerless Thor being exiled on Earth by Odin, the Asgardian All-Father. Initially they didn't know what to make of Thor, with Erik specifically pointing out the weirdness of this strange bearded man spouting out snippets of Norse mythology. However, once The Destroyer arrived in that New Mexico town and Thor was deemed worthy enough to wield Mjolnir again, then they realized he was the real deal.

While Darcy returned in Thor: The Dark World and continued being comedic relief, Erik Selvig not only returned for that movie, but The Avengers beforehand and Avengers: Age of Ultron afterwards. His scientific prowess was most helpful during the MCU's first two phases, although unfortunately after being mind-controlled by Loki in The Avengers and forced to help bring the Chitauri to Earth, Erik became mentally unstable, thus resulting in him having his own humorous moments in The Dark World. Thankfully, he seemed to have (mostly) recovered by the time Age of Ultron rolled around, and he accompanied Thor to the Water of Sights and was recruited to work at the New Avengers Facility.

However, until The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, we had no idea what was going on with either of those characters, or Jane Foster for that matter. Because Thor: Ragnarok primarily took place on Asgard and Sakaar, there wasn't any time to check in on Thor's friends during the brief period on Earth. Jane Foster was only briefly mentioned to have dumped Thor, explaining why the woman who was last seen passionately kissing the God of Thunder wasn't involved in his life anymore. It's ok, we had Hulk, Doctor Strange, Hela and Grandmaster to make up for all that.

Given how jam-packed Avengers 4 is already, I suspect that Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis won't be appearing in it. Thor is most definitely participating in the Phase 3 capper, but one would imagine he's going to have his hands busy like every other superhero. Still, if you want to assume that The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath is canon, then at least now there's a way to learn about what they're doing in the post-Infinity War landscape. Just because they're not directly involved in the fight against the Mad Titan doesn't mean they're not doing important work.

As for Avengers 4, with a little over six months to go until the movie's release, Marvel Studios still hasn't provided any official details about the story. The Quantum Realm is said to play a key role in the movie, and there are rumors and speculation aplenty about how it fits into the big picture, like the heroes time traveling through this other dimension to undo this genocide, or how the "souls" of the people who were turned to dust are trapped there. But aside from knowing most of the main cast members, we remain in the dark on what to expect from Avengers 4, and there's still no word on when the first official images or the teaser trailer will arrive.

MoviePass Downloads Are Still Decreasing Following Changes

Following the move earlier this year that involved MoviePass changing its pricing structure to entice fans with a $9.95 price point, the company has made plenty of additional changes to its structure and availability in a bid to remain solvent. Regardless, many people have not been pleased with the changes the company has made, leading to declines in subscribers to the service. In fact, a recent survey found that that new downloads of the MoviePass app have declined 76% since June of 2018.

The data, which was surveyed by SensorTower, found that over the last several months, new users who are still downloading the MoviePass app have dropped from 330,000 in June to only 80,000 new app users in August. In fact, so far this year, MoviePass has a monthly install growth rate of -19%. To put that in different terms, at the end of June the company was averaging 6,500 downloads a day. By the end of August, MoviePass downloads were only around 1,000 per day.

It should be noted this is just a snapshot of new users downloading an app, so it doesn't give a clear indication of subscribers exiting the service or no longer using the app on the regular. There is, however, a clear correlation between when MoviePass began making changes a few months ago in order to keep people from incessantly using the product to go to big movies. Changes the company has made over the last several months include increasing the price of subscription to $14.95 a month, annual plans were cancelled and the number of movies subscribers can choose from has been drastically cut down.

Meanwhile, MoviePass is facing a variety of competitors, including from various movie theaters. AMC has a news service called Stubs A-List that gives users more access to movies, along with the regular Stubs benefits. Cinemark also has its own movie theater pass called Cinemark Movie Club pass that will allow one 2D ticket a month. In addition, Sinemia has emerged as another MoviePass competitor. Along with the competition, MoviePass' parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics, has seen its stock numbers drop considerably between June and September, as well. (Although recent numbers have shown growth.)

When people initially signed up for the $9.95 pass, subscribers were under the impression they could see up to one movie per day using the pass in theaters, with no restrictions on what movie the user saw or how many times a subscriber saw a particular title. Obviously a lot has changed in recent months, and the new terms are no longer as enticing, even if the pass is still cheaper than the $30 or more people were paying before MoviePass started this little subscription experiment. With Wonder Woman 1984 having been pushed back, the next DC Extended Universe to follow Shazam! is now Birds of Prey. In the comics, the traditional Birds of Prey lineup consists of Black Canary, Huntress and Batgirl. The first two heroines have already confirmed for the movie, and while it doesn't look Barbara Gordon will be showing up, another Batgirl from the comics will make an appearance, as newcomer Ella Jay Basco is being eyed to play Cassandra Cain.

Rather than being a teenager/young adult like she is in the comics, Birds of Prey's version of Cassandra Cain will be a child, and Variety reports that Ella Jay Basco is in negotiations for the role. This will be Basco's first starring appearance onscreen, having previously guest-starred on TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, Superior Donuts and Veep. Cassandra will be protected by Black Canary and Huntress, as well as Harley Quinn, after she finds a diamond belong to Black Mask, one of Gotham City's biggest crime bosses.

Introduced in 1999's Batman #567, which was in the middle of the No Man's Land crossover storyline, Cassandra Cain is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. Cassandra was raised by David to become a formidable assassin, and she ultimately became a skilled martial artist able to effectively read body language the cost was Cassandra learning to read, write or speak. After killing her first target, Cassandra felt immense guilt and ran away from her father. Found by Barbara Gordon, who has long been Oracle by this point, Cassandra became one of her field agents.

When Bruce Wayne learned about Cassandra Cain, he took the girl under his wing and trained her to fight after her brain was rewired to think more like a normal person, leading to her becoming the new Batgirl. During Grant Morrison's Batman Inc. run, Cassandra started going by Black Bat. She was reintroduced in the New 52 continuity during the Batman & Robin Eternal series, and while she's never been Batgirl in this version of DC history, she is once again a member of the Bat-Family and goes by the codename Orphan.

Although Cassandra Cain appeared in several video games and made a cameo appearance in the Justice League episode "The Savage Time Part 1," Birds of Prey will basically mark her first major onscreen appearance. Given her age, it's reasonable to assume that she won't be suiting up as Batgirl or any superhero in the movie. However, if Birds of Prey does well enough to launch its own film series, perhaps we could see this Cassandra become a costumed vigilante as she gets older.

Along with Ella Jay Basco being lined up to play Cassandra Cain, Birds of Prey's cast includes Margot Robbie reprising Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. Cathy Yan is directing and Christina Hodson wrote the script.
