Carrie Fisher's Brother Promises Unused Leia Footage For Episode IX

After Carrie Fisher's heartbreaking passing, there was an open question of how exactly General Leia and her story would be handled in Star Wars: Episode IX. We learned that the more obvious, but controversial routes of recasting or using CGI were off the table, and J.J. Abrams would instead be taking advantage of unused footage of the actress. Now Carrie Fisher's brother, Todd Fisher has spoken about the unused footage and how it will work, saying:

There's a lot of minutes of footage. I don't mean just outtakes. This is unused, new content that could be woven into the storyline. That's what's going to give everybody such a great kick. It's going to look like it was meant to be. Like it was shot yesterday.

Todd Fisher seems clued in at least to some degree to what exactly Disney and Lucasfilm have footage-wise of Carrie Fisher, and what he says here is encouraging. I'm not sure what constitutes "a lot of minutes of footage" but the way he says it, it makes it sound like they have enough to do what they need to do.

Although we initially heard that unused footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be used, it was later revealed to include stuff from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which J.J. Abrams could pull from when crafting her role.

Even more encouraging than just the quantity of footage they have to work with is what kind of footage it is. As Todd Fisher tells ABC News, this isn't just a case of outtakes that will need to be shoehorned in to fit the story. The filmmakers apparently have unused content, presumably from scrapped scenes, that can be used and fit naturally into the storyline of Episode IX.

Obviously Todd Fisher was not able to reveal any details about what footage they have or anything about Leia Organa's story in J.J. Abrams' film, but it is exciting to hear that he is so pleased with how they are handling his sister's character.

It is a natural concern that relying solely on unused footage from the previous two films, would create some major headaches for the filmmakers and perhaps negatively impact the film, but based on Todd Fisher's remarks the footage looks like it was shot yesterday and will fit seamlessly into Episode IX.

When a tragedy like Carrie Fisher's passing strikes there is no perfect answer and the concerns of a film are far from paramount. Nevertheless, Todd Fisher's words may help Star Wars fans feel better that Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia will be given a proper sendoff.

What that sendoff will be is anyone's guess. The film may pick up events a year after The Last Jedi. It's hard to imagine that Princess Leia will have much of a role in Episode IX beyond the first act, but we'll have to see.

Once this movie comes out it will be a very interesting exercise to look at how well this unused footage fit with the rest of the film and where it might have fit in the previous two films. I will also be curious to speculate about how much the rest of the story was dictated by what was available for the Leia character.

Disney Brought Avengers: Endgame To Troops In The Middle East Thanks To Viral Tweet

While Avengers: Endgame is pretty much the box office king at this current time, and it feels like a lot of people have seen it at least once, we must remember that not everyone gets to see Joe and Anthony Russos comic book opus at the same time. This is especially true when it comes to those men and women who are deployed overseas, in the enduring effort of protecting the world and our nation. But for those who were lucky enough to attend, there were several screenings of Avengers: Endgame brought to troops in the Middle East, as a viral tweet from a military spouse sent the right message to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Kat Lancaster, wife to Air Force Major Joshua Lee Lancaster, was the person to spur this all on. Starting with a simple tweet, asking the Disney CEO if there was any chance of bringing Avengers: Endgame to the troops, this lead to Iger not only promising to check on the possibility of bringing the film to bases in Afghanistan and Al Udeid, but eventually delivering on said promise.

Bagram Air Base and Al Udeid Air Base were then allowed to host several showings of Avengers: Endgame for soldiers stationed in those areas. And it was all thanks to the efforts of a wife who missed her husband so much, she wanted to share a huge cultural moment with him and his colleagues.

Of course, in true Disney fashion, Stars and Stripes reported that the hard drive carrying the $1 billion+ grossing blockbuster to our men and women in the military was guarded in transit, and required an encryption key to activate. Once everything was set up though, the fun could begin, and in the case of Bagram Air Field, the film was actually shown eight times.

For those of you keeping score, thats basically a whole entire days worth of Avengers: Endgame screenings, clocking in at approximately 24 hours and 16 minutes. Which is comforting to know, as if the civilian population could find themselves offered such a convenience on our home soil, its nice to know that for one day out of their lives, military personnel could feel like they were back home again.

Sending a theatrical experience as fantastic as Avengers: Endgame to the troops in the Middle East is a real good guy move on the part of Bob Iger and The Walt Disney Company, and its something that even Captain America could fully support. And while these sorts of screenings do tend to happen from time to time, itll be nice to see if Disney is already in talks to make sure that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gets that same treatment come Christmas time.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, and we salute Kat Lancaster in her effort to bring some normalcy and entertainment to our men and women serving abroad.

This feels a little bit like Goodbye. The X-Men movies are getting a tribute video ahead of the release of Simon Kinbergs Dark Phoenix, and because of what we know of the behind-the-scenes creativity shifts, this feels like a sendoff to the series forged at Fox as it might take up new residency in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But as this Legacy video points out, the X-Men Saga had a significant impact on the comic-book-movie landscape, and it has one more shot at success with a retelling of the Phoenix storyline:

This is a touching video because it shows how long the X-Men stories have been entertaining audiences, and leans into the brilliant casting that has been a hallmark of the franchise from day one. Getting the likes of Hugh Jackman, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Halle Berry and more to discuss their roles in the X-Men films, and the impact of the series, reminds us of how far this family has come.

It also shows how complicated it might be for Marvel Studios to essentially start over on the X-Men properties, because the Legacy thats established in this video cant just be erased and rebooted.

Do we want to see MCU versions of classic characters like Cyclops, Jean and Wolverine on screen some day? Sure, when we see what Marvel has done with the likes of Spider-Man, Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy. But will it be easy to just overlook the work done by Jackman, Stewart, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and more? Not exactly.

This tribute video also gets us even more excited for the work thats still to come in Dark Phoenix. If Fox allowed Kinberg to treat the movie like a sendoff, then we might get real closure for major characters who have earned a closing chapter in this mutant-movie book.

We are seeing significant sendoffs in the MCU (in Avengers: Endgame) and on HBO (with Game of Thrones). After all of these years, shouldnt the X-Men be able to say goodbye to their fans the way that they see fit?

Dark Phoenix looks like its going to go out on a blast. Sophie Turner will be bringing the classic Jean Grey comic-book storyline to life, being blessed and cursed with the power of the Phoenix when a routine space rescue mission goes south. Its very possible that key members of the X-Men saga continue with Disney and Marvel when the MCU starts making X-Men movies. No concrete plans have bene announced. But for now, we still have Dark Phoenix to look forward to, and this tribute video was a satisfying appetizer for the mutant meal thats still to come.

In a year chock full of superhero films from all the major players, the one that looks the most unique is arriving almost last in the form of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The animated film from producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller promises to show audiences the Web-Head as we've never seen him before. Early tracking is in on the movie, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse could make between $28 million to $35 million opening weekend.

An opening weekend of $28 million to $35 million would likely swing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse into the top spot at the box office over its opening frame December 14-16. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is a little more reserved with its estimates than the top end of the tracking services, and the studio is expecting about $30 million for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opening weekend.

The mid-December frame isn't necessarily known to be the most fertile ground for big openings, but Into the Spider-Verse is still looking at first place. With a few weeks to go and a final marketing push, projections could go higher. And with a huge opening less likely, there is the hope that the PG-rated film can keep bringing in audiences throughout the holiday season once people have already seen the even bigger titles.

Speaking of other titles, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not the only film opening over the December 14-16 weekend. Also opening is the Peter Jackson-produced Mortal Engines and Clint Eastwood's The Mule.

Mortal Engines is not looking like it will have the horsepower to catch Spidey at the box office. The post-apocalyptic film, based on the novel by Philip Reeve and from director Christian Rivers, is a big-budget blockbuster with a built-in audience, but is only tracking to open in the range of $12 million to $18 million.

The Mule is tracking to open with around $12 million to $15 million. The film stars director Clint Eastwood as a down on his luck old man who winds up becoming a drug courier for the Sinaloa Cartel. All of these films will probably have to hope for some serious legs and great word of mouth as they face an onslaught the following week with Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman and Bumblebee all entering the Christmas fray.

A first place win and a long and successful run in the weeks after release for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse would be just another feather in the cap for Sony's 2018, as well as open up the possibility for more animated Spidey down the line. Venom delivered for the studio in a massive way and portends a bright future for the studio's shared cinematic universe. Venom gave Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a leg up in its post-credits scene, so we'll see how much that helped in a few short weeks.

The script problems caused Bond 25 to shift its release date back from February of next year to April. If Daniel Craig's injury had been more severe another potential delay may have been in the cards, but it now seems like that won't be necessary. Craig's injury came near the end of Bond 25's time filming in Jamaica.
