Dave Bautista Calls His Guardians Of The Galaxy Audition 'A Nightmare'

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a behemoth undertaking, with many franchises and heroes occupying the big screen. But there are certain properties that have especially resonated with audiences, and chief among them is James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn took a relatively unknown group of motley characters, and brought a quirky set of movies that elevated the cast to fan favorites. And that includes Dave Bautista's Drax the Destroyer.

Drax is a scene stealer in the Guardians and Avengers movies, with Bautista showing off his comedic chops in the process. But according to the wrestler turned actor, he had a terrible audition for the role. He recently opened up about this during a public appearance, saying:

Oh my God, it was a nightmare. I was terrified. I was really desperate at the time, I had hardly worked in three years, and I had gone broke from wrestling and I was desperate to get a job. I finally got an agent like two weeks before I got the audition for Guardians. My agent says 'You know, I really had to fight to get you this audition. It was really hard to get, they didn't really want to audition you. They didn't want any pro wrestlers, so I don't want to get your hopes up.

While auditions are always a nerve-wracking experience, it looks like the stakes were especially high for Dave Bautista when it came to playing Drax. He needed a job badly, and apparently the odds were stacked against him. But we all know how that turned out.

It's hard to imagine anyone but Dave Bautista playing Drax, but that doesn't mean the role was straight up offered to the 50 year-old actor. His star power has grown significantly due to playing the Marvel hero, but he was lacking that reputation back when he was auditioning to play the role. As such, he had to work doubly hard to bring something unique to the room, and truly be considered to be a Guardian of the Galaxy.

So how exactly did Dave Bautista do it? Namely, but working hard on the audition material with an acting coach. Later in his appearance at Denver Pop Culture Con (via CBR), he explained what ultimately went into that fateful audition. He said:

He built my hopes really low, so I went in with low expectations. I didn't understand Drax. I called my acting coach and said 'I don't get this,' and he flipped out because he's like the biggest fanboy. Anyway, he made me do the research and I found one picture of Drax, and I said 'That looks like me!' He babied me through this whole process, my first and second auditions, my acting coach came with me. I read for Sarah Finn, she's amazing. I read with her and she said 'Don't be nervous. Take your time, we can be here all day.'

While Dave Bautista really needed to land the gig of Drax, it looks like he did have a fair amount of support behind his Guardians and the Galaxy try-out. That includes a warm room, with the casting director encouraging Bautista to take his time and make the most of his audition. It was a formula that worked, and he's been killing it as Drax the Destroyer ever since.

Wait, Did Vin Diesel Join The Avatar Sequels?

Right now, under the strictest measures of security, writer/director James Cameron is making the sequels to his record breaking opus Avatar, in anticipation of the releasing the first follow up at the end of next year. And while taking a break from the rigors of that gargantuan task, Cameron decided to record a short video on set with a new friend, Fast and Furious lead and celebrity uber-nerd Vin Diesel. But, wait a second, could this mean that Diesel has joined the ranks of the cast for this big ticket event franchise?

This prospect seems to be pretty likely from where were standing, as this feels like one of the only reasons that the stereotypically cryptic James Cameron would even let Vin Diesel glimpse at what he considers top secret materials of a sensitive nature. Sure, theres a possibility that Diesel and Cameron are mutual fans of each others work and just wanted to hang out, but this doesnt seem like the kind of place to do that unless some sort of Avatar business was involved.

In addition to that speculation, and between the lighthearted joking and friendly patter shown on display between the two titans, there were some choice remarks made by Vin Diesel that have us questioning if some sort of big announcement is coming our way in the future.

Specifically, Diesel said the following, which set off alarm bells in our heads:

Its long overdue. There is one person in Hollywood Ive always wanted to work with, and learn from. All things come, I guess, to those who wait.

Cue some shenanigans with funny voices and references to Kung Fu, and youve got a perfect recipe for a cute viral video that could lead to a lot more if the implications are correct. But theres another interesting point to make, as this Instagram posts contents snuck in one more potential bit of news.

Right at the beginning of the video, James Cameron announced that he and Vin Diesel were on the set of Avatars 2, 3, 4, & 5, which is interesting considering those last two sequels don't have an official green light just yet. While this doesnt particularly mean anything, seeing as how Cameron is probably more than optimistic hell get those last two films off the ground, it wouldnt be surprising if that was another featured bit of news coming down the pike in the near future.

With the Disney/Fox merger now complete, and the Aliens filmmaker more than entrenched with both halves of that corporate cookie, this new alliance could be the moment everyone was waiting for before pulling the trigger on Jake Sullys continuing adventures. And with new sequels come new cast members to help flesh out the 5 film story James Cameron has planned.

Now we must remind you dear Avatar fans that this isnt an official announcement of any sort of partnership or deal for Vin Diesel to join on for Avatar 2-5, or that the entries 4 and 5 are confirmed to be officially in the works. Hell, we cant even tell you if the titles that supposedly leaked are legit or not. All we can say is that Diesel has been spotted on the set with James Cameron, and it really sounds like the two are thick as thieves, plotting an otherworldly adventure that could change the movie world again.

What we can tell also you, among other things, is that Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 18, 2020; and that you can visit the attraction Pandora The World of Avatar at Walt Disney Worlds Animal Kingdom. Which will probably be super easy to access once that other big Disney Parks attraction opens at various periods this year.

One Incredibles Side Character Who Almost Had A Bigger Role In Incredibles 2

This might be a very mild spoiler for Incredibles 2. You have been warned!

One big challenge, when a filmmaker agrees to do a sequel, is figuring out how to bring every popular character back. It has to make sense in the context of the story, and shouldn't just pander to the fan base. Remember how much you liked "Fill-in-the-blank" character? Well, here's their glorified cameo! Brad Bird faced this issue when reviving The Incredibles after a 14 year absence, planning to set Incredibles 2 mere minutes after the original movie ended. And during a recent press day at Pixar, when Bird was asked about the characters in his sequel, he revealed that we ALMOST were going to see Frozone's wife, Honey, in person in the upcoming Incredibles 2... but for a good reason, they opted against it. Bird explained:

We wanted to show Honey in this movie. We didn't end up doing it, because it's funnier as a voice. So we actually went through all the trouble of designing the character and the design appears in the movie, but not as Frozone's wife. ... We have used her design, and she is a hero. There's not a lot of screentime, though. The problem is, we have a lot of different things that we want the movie to be about, and we're already, the two Incredibles movies are already the longest movies at Pixar, and they are never happy about that!

Honey is a voice off camera in the original movie. It has become a beloved bit, with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) shouting to his wife, wondering where his super suit is. Here, catch up with it again. It's still funny, nearly 15 years later. "I am the greatest good you are ever going to get!'

The scene is called back to in the most recent Incredibles 2 trailer, as well. The clip ends on a similar interaction, with Frozone rushing to get into his suit "ASAP." And we hear Honey's voice, lecturing her brow-beaten spouse that he better "be back ASAP." This is not the look of a man who is pleased to hear Honey's voice!

The question asked of Brad Bird at the Incredibles 2 press day at Pixar was about seeing more diversity and representation in the world of these super-powered beings. And so Bird wanted to make it clear that while he considered bringing Honey into the light, they ultimately decided against it, because the joke is funnier as being an off-camera voice.

However, it's encouraging to hear that they designed the look of the character, and then used her on a different hero. We reported earlier that Brad Bird and his team will use Incredibles 2 to introduce all new heroes, some of them going by the name of the Wannabes. I wonder if the Honey design made its way onto one of those character
