One Big Difference Between Captain Marvels Nick Fury And His Present Day Self

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a fascinating place right now, as the entire shared universe as we know it is coming to an end. The insane events of Avengers: Infinity War will be concluded when Avengers 4 completes Phase Three, but before that we have the highly anticipated release of Captain Marvel. Starring Oscar winner Brie Larson, the next Marvel movie will take us back to the 90s, and introduce the most powerful hero audiences have seen yet. But there will also be plenty of familiar faces, the most exciting of which being Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Fury will be digitally de-aged and given back his eye in Captain Marvel, and now Jackson has revealed how the character will be different from the version audiences are used to. As he tells it,

The Nick Fury we meet is sort of a bureaucrat in an interesting sort of way. He hadn't become jaded or a slave to the cynicism that we normally see. He sort of respects the people that are above him, more so than the Nick Fury that people are used to.

Talk about a plot twist. It looks like we're meeting an inexperienced, hopeful, and lighter Nick Fury that the one who made his debut at the tail end of Iron Man. Fury has always been no nonsense and all action, so it should be fascinating to see how the character changes throughout the course of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's upcoming blockbuster.

It looks like Captain Marvel is going to really expand the part of Nick Fury, who has been an important part of the MCU since the jump. Despite being an undeniable badass and ultimately the man responsible for getting The Avengers together, moviegoers haven't really been privy to Nick Fury's inner workings. What is the true personality that lives underneath the eye patch? That's what Captain Marvel bring, as we meet Fury early into his tenure at S.H.I.E.L.D..

In his same conversation with EW, Samuel L. Jackson spoke about another aspect of Nick Fury that will be different in Captain Marvel: he can crack a joke. As Jackson revealed,

He has a greater sense of humor in this than anything I've done before.

As if we need another reason to get Captain Marvel tickets. Aside from fleshing out the MCU and bringing in a new hero, the upcoming blockbuster will also allow Samuel L. Jackson to flex his comedic muscles, and lighten up as Nick Fury for the first time in a decade of moviemaking.

All will be revealed when Captain Marvel arrives in theaters on March 8, 2019, followed by Avengers 4 on May 3rd. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

What Danny McBride Actually Thought About The Fake Dundee Movie

The fake Crocodile Dundee movie by Tourism Australia was one of the more fun and memorable promotions in recent memory. The prospect of a sequel/reboot of a well-known property arriving seemingly out of the blue was intriguing. It also had to be exciting for the all-star cast of Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home to be a part of something that was secretive and would have people talking, knowing all along that this was really an elaborate marketing campaign. For the star of the ad, Danny McBride, who played Brian Dundee, the response to the ad took him by surprise, as he explained:

I thought, personally, with the current state of movies, people for sure would assume, like, 'What a terrible idea for a movie.' And there were definitely people who thought that, but there were also people who were into the idea. I thought for a second, 'Maybe I was too harsh, this would be a cool movie.'

When the first trailer debuted, those in the film community suspected right away that something might be up, but I imagine the reaction was much different for the average person who doesn't follow movie news or read sites like this one. With all the reboots and nostalgia-mining taking place in Hollywood right now, it would be easy to believe that many thought this looked like a real movie, and a bad one at that. But perhaps the trailers did their job too well; with all the star power, humor and cinematic presentation, people took this as a real movie and one they'd like to see. As Danny McBride told Business Insider, not everyone thought Dundee looked terrible. In fact, a lot of folks were excited to see it and are still championing for it to become a reality.

I have never seen the original Crocodile Dundee films, but just based on the trailers for Dundee, you could see why people think this should become a real thing. Danny McBride was perfect playing his quintessentially Danny McBride character as a fish out of water who was the last person you would imagine to be the son of the legendary Mick Dundee. We get plenty of action and blockbuster films with doses of comedy thrown in these days, but adventure comedies that really lean into the funny elements are rarer. Perhaps that's part of the reason for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's success.

So while on the surface if someone were to pitch you a new Crocodile Dundee movie, you might think it looks stupid, but the trailers actually sold something that looks like fun. Sadly, it does not look like Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home will become a real movie, at least not now. But that doesn't mean Danny McBride isn't interested in teaming up with Chris Hemsworth. He even has an idea of what project they can work together on, saying:

Chris and I had never worked before and we had a blast on this, so who knows, maybe me and him can come up with something to do together --- maybe we'll be the Children of Mad Max.

Yes please! Danny McBride excels when he has another fun actor to play off of, a la Walton Goggins in Vice Principals. Chris Hemsworth has continued to prove in Thor: Ragnarok and even this tourism ad that he can do comedy just as well as he does action. So if he and Danny McBride were to pair up for an action-comedy adventure, be it a post-apocalyptic Mad Max type film, a buddy cop film or just about anything else, I'm there. If they were to actually team up for a Dundee reboot, even better. And hey, Chris Hemsworth already sounds like he's on board for it.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Reviews Are Up, Heres What Critics Say About The Sequel

In the October season of spooks and haunts, there are plenty of opportunities to find some genuine chills in spirit of the holiday with upcoming releases such as this year's horror remakes Halloween and Suspiria. However, for those looking for more family-friendly Halloween scares, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween could hit the spot. It's a sequel to the 2015 adaptation of the beloved frightening children's book by R.L. Stine, who is portrayed by Jack Black in the movie.

Just before Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween's release tomorrow, reviews have trickled in. CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes gave an overall good impression in his review considering its intended audience. He found Haunted Halloween to tread lighter than its chilling source material, opting for more of a Hocus Pocus-like comedic approach. In his words:

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween will please children to no end, provided they haven't started graduating to the world of any horror films with ratings of PG-13 or above. It's a lightning fast experience that floats on air, and can keep a family entertained for its brief, but exciting run. Though the story is slight, it's still entertaining and perfect for this year's Halloween season.

Since Haunted Halloween looks to be the only major Halloween-themed title this season targeting the whole family, the film does its job of delivering just what one would expect from this sort of release. However, for Entertainment Weekly reviewer Dana Schwartz, the sequel treaded the line of expectation a little too closely, finding it all to similar to the 2015 release. Here's what she said:

Although the film is technically a sequel, the cast is entirely new, with only Jack Black reprising his role (all too briefly) as the author R.L. Stine. And the plot --- the Goosebumps books come to life! --- is so similar to the first film that I wouldn't be surprised to learn Haunted Halloween was a rejected early draft.

Per these reviews, it looks like the new Goosebumps plays it a bit safe plot wise. For audiences who don't put too high expectation on seeing something groundbreaking and are just looking for a good time with the family during the spooky season, Haunted Halloween might do just the trick. Indiewire's Kate Erbland echoes similar the sentiments of other reviewers with these words:

The creativity may be lacking in other areas, but Goosebumps 2 steps up the creature feature quotient with style and smarts. Sandel, who will next direct a big screen version of the animated series "Monster High," has a firm handle on his classic horror film tropes and inventive monsters --- and while Goosebumps 2 muzzles them, underneath all the kiddie stuff, there's real terror. It just needs to be unleashed a bit more the next time around.

While most critics find something to enjoy in Haunted Halloween, Variety's Owen Gleiberman has more bones to pick with the sequel. The reviewer delivered some harsher lines about the movie, saying that it was all smoke screens and not enough story. In his words:

In the movie, Stine complains that he was never able to come up with an adequate ending for "Haunted Halloween." It's up to the kids to write the ending, but despite their best efforts Goosebumps 2 isn't a movie, exactly --- it's a piata of effects posing as a movie. By the end, there's nothing to do but sweep up the pieces.

Overall, early reviews of Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween agree with each other. The movie offers a likable family film with light scares, shies away from twists and turns away from the genre, but it's also not without its issues. Haunted Halloween comes to theaters alongside First Man and Bad Times at the El Royale on October 12.





Reflecting on the whole thing, Paul Wernick did throw some regret into the mix, noting that it probably wasn't the best thing for them to do from a storytelling standpoint — but that the big laugh and the nature of Deadpool as a character just made the whole thing too irresistible.
