It's Been One Year Since The Dark Universe Was Announced, So What Happened?

Cinematic universes are all the rage right now in Hollywood, whether they're superhero-centric like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or are more fantasy-oriented like the Wizarding World. Universal Pictures was eager to get in on that kind of blockbuster action, and today marks the one-year anniversary that the Dark Universe was officially announced. Much like in the Golden Age of Hollywood, the Dark Universe would see the studio's classic monsters, like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolf Man, occupying the same world, and The Mummy kicked off the whole initiative. However, a year later, the Dark Universe has barely moved forward. While it hasn't been officially announced that it's been scrapped, it certainly doesn't have the same driving energy it once had, and we can presumably thank The Mummy's disappointing theatrical performance for that.

It's worth noting first that The Mummy wasn't the first time Universal attempted to launch a shared universe. Originally 2014's Dracula Untold was supposed to be the first chapter of what would be known as the Dark Universe, and the movie's final scene showed the eponymous vampire in the present day. But Dracula Untold was met with numerous negative reviews, so it was decided to keep that as a standalone tale and instead have The Mummy introduce moviegoers to the Dark Universe. Besides being a staple of the old-school Universal monsters lineup, The Mummy had already been turned into a trilogy of films starring Brendan Frasier, so the 2017 reboot had to not only launch a new franchise, but also feel different enough from the previous Mummy movies. Starring Sofia Boutella as the eponymous monster and Tom Cruise as main protagonist Nick Morton, The Mummy certainly wasn't lacking for action, but during the main story, the seeds were also planted for the wider Dark Universe, primarily through Russell Crowe's Henry Jekyll (yes, he did turn into Mr. Hyde) and the secret society known as Prodigium.

Despite its prime June release date and bombardment of marketing, The Mummy failed to critically impress, ranking at 15% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 35% among audiences. Commercially, the movie only made $80.2 million domestically, but by pulling in $329 million internationally (adding up to $409.2 million worldwide), it couldn't be considered a full-blown flop. Nevertheless, The Mummy did not get the Dark Universe off to a good start. A few months after the reboot's release, Alex Kurtzman, the man at the helm of the Dark Universe, was uncertain about if he would continue working on the franchise, and sure enough, by November of last year, Kurtzman and partner Chris Morgan exited the cinematic universe. The second chapter of the Dark Universe, Bride of Frankenstein, was also originally supposed to be released on February 14, 2019, but it was pulled from the schedule so that director Bill Condon and his team wouldn't be rushed.

As of January, Bride of Frankenstein is back in development, so regardless of what happens with the rest of the Dark Universe, it sounds like that movie is forthcoming. It also wouldn't be wise to completely write off the Dark Universe as a whole just yet, as artist Robert Vargas recently posted on Instagram that he had met with the Dark Universe team and will soon be contributing to the franchise. There are also plenty of other Dark Universe movies that are in development, like The Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Van Helsing, as well as monsters like Dracula, the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Phantom of the Opera waiting to be introduced.

So where does this leave us? Well, it appears that the Dark Universe is still hanging on by a thread, and whoever is creatively in charge of the franchise now is working with others to get it back on course. But given how terribly The Mummy performed critically, this will be an uphill battle, and it's entirely possible that at some point Universal will just bite the bullet and scrap the entire thing. Maybe Bride of Frankenstein and a few of these other monster-led movie will still be released, but they'll be self-contained stories rather than pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that is a shared universe. For now, the Dark Universe is clinging to life, but it will take a lot for it to become a true competitor for these other franchises.

Why Peter Jackson Is Very Excited About Making Mortal Engines Sequels

Peter Jackson is a man who knows a thing or two about building franchises. After all, he is the man behind one of the most successful, ambitious examples ever to come out of Hollywood. That in mind, most recently he's been putting his brain power into Mortal Engines, the upcoming adaptation based on the novel by author Philip Reeve, and he definitely has sequels in his thoughts. Why? Because he believes that the source material only improves as it progresses:

You should [read all the books] because they actually get better and better. This is one movie where I hope it's successful enough that we get to do the other stories, because the other books are really... this story mushrooms in such unexpected ways in the future books. So, I really hope we get to make those films. It's cool. It's a love story. It's an unlikely love story. It's about a young woman who doesn't really think that she will ever find love, and she finds it in a very unexpected way in the middle of this chaotic, strange world that we're in. And I also just like the idea of seeing big cities eat other.

That quote comes from an interview I did last summer on the set of Mortal Engines down in Wellington, New Zealand -- which I had been invited to along with a small group of other journalists. While talking with Peter Jackson, who is serving as both co-writer and producer on the movie, the filmmaker was asked about what has kept him interested in the project, having started to develop it back in 2009. His explanation was that he just really loves the source material, and feels that it can develop into something great over the course of multiple chapters.

The first Mortal Engines book was published in 2001, but its quickly-earned popularity allowed it to spawn a sequel two years later: Predator's Gold. Ultimately Philip Reeve wrote four books in the series, with the first two novels followed by 2005's Infernal Devices and 2006's A Darkling Plain. Hollywood has certainly seen a number of these kinds of franchises be successful in recent years, and if the quality and audience reaction proves strong enough, it's easy to imagine big screen follow-ups.

To that end, Peter Jackson also told us that the Mortal Engines movie will feature particular references and keep a few doors open -- allowing a sequel to pick up certain threads. That being said, he also stressed that these elements would remain small and wouldn't detract from the larger self-contained nature of the story being told, just in case sequels don't wind up happening. Said Jackson,

I think that is where we have an advantage where Philip Reeve didn't, because when he wrote the first book I don't think he knew he was going to write the other books. I think he wrote that one book as a story, and then through the fact that people liked it and obviously he thought he had more story to tell, he carried on. We have benefited, obviously, knowing now what's in the other books in the future. So there are little subtle things we're doing that will help us flow into the other. They're not anything that changes anything much, but it's just stuff that because we know what is going to happen in the future with these books in the story we're able to plant little things here and there that will be helpful to us should we be so lucky to make more films.

Directed by Christopher Rivers, Mortal Engines is a sci-fi adventure movie set in a future decimated by nuclear war. What remains of the world are various cities that operate as giant mobile machines, the bigger ones devouring the smaller ones to take their resources and grow even larger. Robert Sheehan, Hera Hilmar star, with Hugo Weaving, Stephen Lang, and Colin Salmon in supporting roles. How Peter Dinklage Helped Jamie Dornan Prepare For Fifty Shades Freed

There are a lot of fairly famous names in Fifty Shades franchise movies, but we didn't know until recently that Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage was actually responsible for helping Jamie Dornan get ready for the third movie Fifty Shades Freed. During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Peter Dinklage volunteered the information, noting,

I read some of the screenplay, though, in our dressing room. I went in. He had to do some reshoots for Fifty Shades and I would help him out learning lines. I would read the Dakota Johnson parts. Yeah, I was just helping a friend learn lines. I nailed it. I really did.

Following Peter Dinklage's amusing reveal about how he helped his My Dinner With Herve co-star Jamie Dornan prep for Fifty Shades Freed, Stephen Colbert chimed in with a great joke of his own, noting after Peter Dinklage said he "nailed it" that he thinks "that was one of the lines." Classic late night.

All in all, it's still a really funny image to think about Jamie Dornan and Peter Dinklage sitting in a dressing room together and reading a bunch of "kinky fuckery" sex scenes with Dinklage in the role Dakota Johnson plays in the movie. Scratch that, I'm really hoping they were rehearsing the scene where Anastasia Steele makes Jamie Dornan steak and they talk about having a family. The possibilities for Dinklage and Dornan rehearsing scenes are endless.

Stephen Colbert also attempted to get Dinklage to compare Fifty Shades fans with those fans who are obsessed with HBO's Game of Thrones. However, Peter Dinklage said there may not be as much crossover as Colbert seemed to be implying, noting that he personally feels they are very different fanbases.

I think Game Of Thrones fans would take issue with comparing the two, because Game of Thrones fans are very specific and lovely.

Peter Dinklage was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about his upcoming movie My Dinner with Herve, a TV flick which is airing on HBO this weekend and tells a story about Fantasy Island actor Herv Villechaize. Peter Dinklage and Stephen Colbert may have just met, but they do have a good rapport, so take a look at the full interview, below.

As for Jamie Dornan, the Fifty Shades Freed actor will also appear in My Dinner with Herve and has a slew of other projects coming up as well thanks to the success of his BDSM movie series. You can also catch him in Robin Hood and A Private War coming up. Although, it's probably safe to assume Peter Dinklage wasn't also around to read Jamie Foxx or Rosamund Pike's parts, unfortunately. I need more collaborations between the two actors right meow.
