Looks Like Birds Of Prey Has Officially Begun Filming

Can you hear Black Canary's cries faintly in the distance? Well, it's one of victory -- she and her new badass girl gang have assembled for the DCEU's upcoming Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which has just started filming, right on schedule.

One of the film's stars, Ella Jay Basco, recently confirmed that principal photography has begun for Birds of Prey on her Twitter account, as reported by Screen Rant, though her original tweet has since been deleted.

Oops! Maybe she wasn't supposed to share? The actress portraying Cassandra Cain (a.k.a. Batgirl in the comics) is a newcomer to the world of hush-hush movie projects. In fact, Birds of Prey will be her debut on the big screen following a few guest appearances on TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy and Veep.

The news isn't catching us off guard though. Birds of Prey was expected to begin production in mid-January and here we are smack dab in the middle of January! It's nice to know everything is going according to plan for the Warner Bros. comic book film.

Birds of Prey will see Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn, but she seems to be ditching her puddin' for a few femme fatales, including Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell). The upcoming film will also feature Rosie Perez as Detective Montoya and Ewan McGregor as the main baddie, a pesky crime boss known as Black Mask.

While an official synopsis for Birds of Prey hasn't been announced yet, it may be about Harley's formation of a team including Huntress and Black Canary to protect young Cassandra Cain after she comes across a diamond belonging to Black Mask. Mindy Project actor Chris Messina has also been cast as the self-mutilating serial killer Victor Zsasz in Birds of Prey as a secondary villain.

Margot Robbie says Birds of Prey isn't a "very serious movie" -- hence the long and slightly ridiculous title, though it is reportedly aiming for an R-rating. The film, which was written by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson and is directed by Cathy Yan, will likely follow in the footsteps of Deadpool's raunchy-humored success, but with a female-led cast at its center.

In comparison to other DCEU planned titles, Birds of Prey has seen a smooth development process and been fast-tracked to be among the many exciting releases for the comic book universe. The movie is actually set to be released before Wonder Woman 1984, which wrapped filming last month.

Birds of Prey is supposed to wrap in mid-April and come to theaters on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 will follow when it hits theaters on June 5, 2020. This year is also set to be a successful year for the DCEU with Shazam! coming April 5. The standalone Joker also comes out on October 4.





If Variety is to be believed, then Robert Pattinson playing Batman is a done deal, with the actor having closed a deal with Warner Bros. However, outlets like The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter are saying that while Warner Bros has selected Pattinson to be the next Batman, a deal hasn't been worked out yet.

What Joaquin Phoenix Could Look Like As The Joker

After months of speculation and coy denials, it was finally confirmed yesterday that Joaquin Phoenix has signed on to play the Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' Joker origin movie. It's exciting to see Joaquin Phoenix finally tackling a comic book character by coming aboard this intriguing project, and there are plenty of reasons to think that he is the perfect fit for the character. Now that it is finally confirmed, we can start getting properly excited about this film, and that includes imagining what a Joaquin Phoenix Joker will look like. If your imagination isn't that powerful and you'd like a visual aid, take a gander below:

As always, BossLogic's artwork does a good job at getting us more hyped than we already were. This Joker movie seems to be aiming to be pretty dark, and this picture reflects that tone. Here Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is sneering, coming off as both bitter and pensive. The makeup is also cool and unique, maintaining Joker's smile even as he frowns, but going lighter on the dark eyes. Jared Leto's Joker's was very noticeable by his tattoos, including one that said "Damaged", but in this design, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker actually is damaged, with his pale skin looking like a concrete wall that has been worn away and chipped at. He also has a great suit and tie combo that looks different from what his predecessors wore.

A lot of times fans don't believe in an actor for a role until they see them in it, most famously when Heath Ledger was cast as The Joker. And while this isn't an official image or anything, this artwork still gives us an idea of how the Oscar-nominated Joaquin Phoenix could look in the role. I really dig this interpretation, and it just goes to show that even though Joaquin Phoenix will be the fifth actor to portray the villain in live action, a new actor and character design can make the Joker new again.

Todd Phillips' Joker origin movie may begin filming as soon as September, and with a low budget of around $55 million. We still don't know much about it beyond that, like whether it is going for an R rating or what exactly the story will be. There is also the fact that this non-DCEU DC film will inevitably muddy the waters a bit with all of the titles Jared Leto's Joker has been rumored to appear in. Hopefully we'll find out more about this project and get some clarification at San Diego Comic-Con next week, so stay tuned. Filming hasn't even started, so it's too early for any stills or teasers, but I would love to see some concept art and hear their vision to get an idea of what direction Todd Phillips' film is taking.

A Marvel And Incredibles Crossover? Brad Bird Explains His Feelings

In our current movie landscape and perhaps forever more, there is a natural inclination to build out cinematic universes, team-ups and crossover films. This is especially true with superhero properties and doubly so when they all fall under the same corporate umbrella. Such is the case with Pixar's Incredibles and Marvel's Avengers, they all belong to one very powerful mouse. So I don't think anyone would be shocked if Pixar's Incredibles films saw an appearance by Earth's Mightiest Heroes in animated form. But when asked about such a possibility, Incredibles 2 director Brad Bird made his feelings on the matter quite clear, saying:

How about we keep these universes separate?

Responding to a question about combining the two universes at an IMAX and AMC Q&A for Incredibles 2, Brad Bird's rhetorical response conveyed his staunch belief about the merits of keeping the Avengers and the Incredibles separate. So I wouldn't go into Incredibles 2 this weekend thinking you're going to see an Iron Man or Captain America cameo. Given the state of the industry, it's unsurprising that this isn't the first time that Brad Bird has been asked a question about the potential of Marvel characters appearing in an Incredibles film. He recently spoke to Fandango and provided some compelling reasoning for not crossing over the brands, saying:

At Pixar we've always felt like Marvel is Marvel, and Pixar is Pixar, and Lucasfilm is Lucasfilm. And they serve everyone better, including Disney, if they're separate. If you start crossing them too much it's like when you blend too many colors together, it starts turning into mud. So, that may make a marketing guy's mouth water but I don't think it makes artists excited.

That is a really great analogy that cuts to the heart of the issue. Both Disney and each of its massive brands are better served by remaining separate. Sure seeing Captain America in a trailer for an Incredibles film or having Spidey on the poster might make for some 'aha' moments and recognition for the audience, but it does nothing to serve the story. It is simply a way to shoehorn a popular IP into everything imaginable. As Brad Bird said, on their own these properties are bright fun colors, but together they would get diluted and muddied until they no longer resemble themselves.

The other thing about an Incredibles-Marvel crossover is that, as comic book fans know, some things simply aren't compatible. For example, even though there have been crossover events in the past, DC and Marvel don't really work together. The same would be true for Incredibles and Marvel. The history of supers established in The Incredibles simply would not really allow for Avengers characters to exist in the same world in their current form. Each has its own specific tone, mode of operation and rules that govern its respective universe and while great on their own, together would be a messy affair that would require mental gymnastics to make sense of it all.

Brad Bird also makes a great point about how the separation is good for Disney. Some people may like Pixar but not Marvel, or Lucasfilm but nothing else. Keeping these various properties separate allows each to stand out on its own. It also insulates each from ebbs and flows in interest and public sentiment. For example Star Wars has been something of a disappointment of late while Marvel is riding as high as it ever has. As much fun as a Patton Oswalt filibuster on Parks and Recreation-esque super shared cinematic universe sounds, it doesn't work in practice. All of these universes are great on their own and there will be no cumulative effect by combining them. Fortunately, at least for Incredibles 2, we don't have to worry about it.
