The upcoming year is one full of epic blockbusters, but one can imagine that few (if any) will be able to compete with Michael Dougherty's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters when it comes to large scale destruction. It just wouldn't be a proper kaiju film without cities and landscapes being bashed and smashed, and it doesn't look like this new one is going to disappoint. If you need any evidence of this, just take a look at the movie's newest TV spot:
Gareth Edwards' Godzilla didn't skimp on the smashy-smashy, delving out some serious destruction in Honolulu and San Francisco, and it looks like Godzilla: King Of The Monsters is going to do the classic sequel thing and kick things up a notch. We already know that the movie is upping the number of iconic giant creatures in play, with Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah all confirmed to appear, and this new spot gives us a nice look at some of the damage they'll be doing.
In case you're not totally up to date on the growing MonsterVerse, this will be the third chapter in the franchise, following up the events featured in both the aforementioned Godzilla from 2014, and Jordan Vogt-Roberts' period-set Kong: Skull Island. The movie is also going to be a precursor to Adam Wingard's 2020 film Godzilla vs. Kong, which is currently in production in Australia - though it's not entirely clear just how much Godzilla: King Of The Monsters will be used to set up the sequel.
Written by Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields, the story will center on a scientist named Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), who studies kaiju for the Monarch agency, and her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown). They get kidnapped by an organization that has their own special plans for the monsters, but machinations lead to the dangerous creatures being unleashed upon the world. The impressive cast also includes Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Zhang Ziyi, Thomas Middleditch, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, David Strathairn, and Ken Watanabe.
Godzilla: King Of The Monsters will be an early part of what is set to be a crazy stacked summer of blockbusters, its arrival in theaters sandwiched between big releases like John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Aladdin, Dark Phoenix, and Men In Black: International. Of course, the best way to stand out and draw attention is by being legitimately good, and given Michael Dougherty's track record (Trick 'r Treat, Krampus), we have a lot of faith.
We haven't seen a new Godzilla: King Of The Monsters trailer since early December, so hopefully another one will be coming soon to give as an even more in-depth look at the upcoming blockbuster. Until then, we'll just be counting down the days until May 31st.
