An All-Female Spy Film Is Coming With Jessica Chastain

From Zero Dark Thirty and The Martian to Interstellar and Molly's Game, Jessica Chastain has left her mark on Hollywood through a variety of movies over the last decade, and her profile is only going to increase. Next February the actress will antagonize Professor Xavier's team of mutant superheroes in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and today brings word that she's joining 355, a large-scale spy film that will see her teaming up with some other popular actresses.

Having just worked with Jessica Chastain on X-Men: Dark Phoenix, director Simon Kinberg has brought Chastain aboard for 355, and the main cast will also include Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong'o and Fan Bingbing. The women will play a team of top international agents from around the world who must set aside their political and social differences and join forces to stop a sinister global organization from obtaining a weapon that could plunge the world into chaos. 355 is described as a "grounded, edgy action thriller" that's aiming to put a female stamp on what's been a primarily male-dominated genre. Theresa Rebeck wrote the script, and the goal is for 355, which Kinberg says is tonally similar to the Bourne movies, to launch a franchise.

While Jessica Chastain is just one of the actresses who will headline 355, she's actually the one who was the driving force with making this movie happen, as she pitched the idea to Simon Kinberg and the other actresses, and slowly but surely, the ball got rolling. Having worked with a female-led ensemble in The Help and dipped her toes into espionage storytelling with Zero Dark Thirty, Chastain was interested in merging those two things together, and 355 is the result. With a cast like that, it's hard to imagine a studio not quickly snatching the movie up. As for what to expect from 355, Kinberg says that the actress will share equal screen time, and then revealed the following to Deadline:

It won't be as hyperbolic as some franchises, and unlike the other films that revolve around one main character, the goal here is the true ensemble, all these characters who have their own distinct traits, histories --- fully formed and complex characters with equal weight in the film. That's unique, as is having all female spies. We are digging into the reality of spy craft today. There are all kinds of things that seem out of a James Bond or even a sci-fi movie, but the technology is so advanced that it's real. Having someone who knows that reality informing the script has been really helpful.

All of Jessica Chastain's 355 co-stars have some blockbuster experience under their belt, with Marion Cotillard appearing in both The Dark Knight Rises, Penelope Cruz appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Lupita Nyong'o appearing in Black Panther and Fan Bingbing appearing in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Seeing the five women kicking ass together on the big screen will ideally result in a highly entertaining action movie.

What's Going On With The Dune Movie, According To Denis Villeneuve

Following the release of Blade Runner 2049 last year, Denis Villeneuve is gearing up to once again dive back into the science fiction realm. However, instead of the rain-soaked noir landscape created by Ridley Scott, the Arrival director will instead make the jump to the Dune franchise for an adaptation of the beloved book of the same name. Dune fans have wondered about the status of the project for quite some time, and Villeneuve recently opened up in an interview at Cannes Film Festival to confirm that a script has been finished and he's getting to work on the first of multiple installments. Villeneuve explained:

Eric Roth wrote the first draft and I worked on my side afterward. I have not had such fun on the creative side since Incendies! My wish would have been to make both films at the same time but it will be too expensive. We will do them one at a time.

So, the script for the Dune adaptation has been completed, and Denis Villeneuve is now hard at work developing the project. The man behind Sicario has spoken passionately about his intentions for the project for quite some time (even drawing comparisons to the Star Wars franchise), and he has made slow and steady progress towards turning the project into a reality. Considering how much fun he claims to be having assembling the film, we may soon have another love letter to the sci-fi genre on our hands.

It also sounds like the director has his work cut out for him in terms of the sheer amount of material on his plate. In fact, elsewhere in his interview with La Presse at Cannes, it was confirmed that Denis Villeneuve plans to split the Dune source material and tell the story over the course of two movies. We have discussed this potential creative move in the past, and this affirms the fact that more than one Dune film is actually on the way -- though the director said he can't shoot them both simultaneously for financial reasons.

Dune is one of those properties that represents the benchmark for genuine sci-fi fandom. A novel series originally penned by Frank Herbert, the story centers on feuding houses of nobles on a futuristic planet Arrakis, with heavy thematic emphasis on ideas like environmentalism and gender roles. Dune was adapted to the big screen in 1984 when David Lynch's Dune debuted, but Denis Villeneuve has made it very clear that he wants to take the franchise in a new direction and properly adapt it based on his own unique vision for the property.

Following the disappointing 2017 The Mummy reboot, Universals vision to start up an interconnected universe in which their movie monsters could interact in was scraped - including an Invisible Man re-imagining starring Johnny Depp. That being said, not all future plans for the creepy film icons are totally dead, though, as a new Invisible Man project helmed by Upgrades Leigh Whannell is in the works with Elisabeth Moss tapped to star. Of course, this has led to a lot of questions regarding the role that the Handmaids Tale actress would play, and she recently addressed those queries in an interview:

I havent gotten into what Im allowed to say yet. Im pretty sure I can say that Im not The Invisible Man. That would be weird. Its a little bit of a different take on it. Part of the reason why I wanted to do it is I actually felt like it was a really feminist story of female empowerment and a victim kind of overcoming something. I dont even know what Im allowed to say about it! Im not The Invisible Man, but there is an Invisible Man if that makes any sense.

Interesting! As Elisabeth Moss touched on in her interview with The Hollywood Reporter, it would be strange if a movie about the legendary Invisible Man was switched to a woman. Then again, Hollywood has been prone to gender-swapping their franchises with female leads so jumping to that conclusion especially when the movie doesnt yet have a male lead was a fair assumption. But apparently it's not to be.

The Mad Men actress is clearly trying not to give anything away about her upcoming film, but from what we can gather her character is a victim of sorts (maybe of the Invisible Man's?), and this movie will see her take on an empowering character arc where shell overcome adversity. Elisabeth Moss is known for taking on roles with feminist themes, so her decision to sign on to this high-profile movie is made more clear through her recent quote.

The original Universal project led by Johnny Depp was a completely different script with planned ties to other Dark Universe films such as The Mummy. Ed Solomon, who also worked on Men In Black and Now You See Me, was signed on to write the previous project before the writer/director behind Insidious: Chapter 3 and Upgrade took over. The new movie, produced by Jason Blum, is set to start filming later this year.

Blumhouse is also reportedly considering plans to revitalize franchises for Scream and Hellraiser, along with a more chilling take on Fantasy Island. Elisabeth Moss played a small role in Jordan Peeles hit horror flick Us and currently stars in indie drama Her Smell about a punk rocker who struggles with addiction as she tries to revitalize her music career - which is in select theaters now.
