What Black Panther 2 Should Do About Killmonger

Warning: MASSIVE spoilers ahead for Black Panther! Read ahead at your own risk!

At this point, it's obvious that Black Panther was a massive hit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film properly introduced audiences to the world of Wakanda, and it offered up one of the MCU's best villains in the form of Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger. Erik Killmonger made a clear impression on viewers for his fascinating ideology and his heart-wrenching death, which is why the internet was shocked by the recent revelation that there may be potential plans in the works to bring him back for Black Panther 2. This news raises significant questions about how the MCU could treat Killmonger going forward, but no matter what happens, I firmly believe that the badass villain needs to stay dead.

The wheels started turning this morning when Metro wrote that Michael B. Jordan was reportedly "in talks" to sign on for Black Panther 2, in addition to the report that Donald Glover had also taken part in talks for the film as well. Nothing has been confirmed at this stage, but if true, this could lead to Killmonger having some degree of a role in the next Black Panther solo film, which is intriguing, because of the way Black Panther left things with Erik Killmonger.

Few villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have ever died as beautifully as Erik Killmonger. The lost son of Wakanda returned home with a violent vengeance as an adult and brought his arguably bastardized sense of violent extremism to the country in his wake. This conflict against T'Challa's isolationist policies eventually led to a massive showdown between the two characters, with T'Challa finally finding a way to shut down Killmonger's vibranium suit and plunge a knife into his heart. From there, Killmonger faded away peacefully (presumably the first real peace he had felt in a long time) as he watched the sunset over Wakanda.

As far as character arcs go, that's reasonably close to perfect. Killmonger's death is a somber moment that definitively punctuates his role in Black Panther. It's not left open for more conflict between him and T'Challa, as the two seemingly understood each other at that moment -- even if they still disagreed. With such a perfect conclusion to the Killmonger story, doing anything else with the character in Wakanda could potentially sully the effectiveness of that scene. No resurrection, no Infinity Stone timeline trickery in Avengers 4, and no secret reveal that he faked his death. Let him die the honorable death he deserved and then stay dead.

Having said all of that, there is one way to bring Killmonger back and have it work: take a cue from Forest Whitaker's recent remarks about resurrecting Zuri, and bring him back in the Ancestral Plane. The film goes to great lengths to establish a realm in which the spirits of past Black Panthers can roam, and it's a location where dead characters can show up to speak to T'Challa.

If any character can fit into this particular idea, it's Killmonger. Not only was the Wakandan-American villain a blood relative of T'Challa, but he also briefly served as a Black Panther, even undergoing the ceremony that allowed him to visit the Ancestral Plane as well. Beyond that, Killmonger's ideology has become widely-regarded by fans (whether they agree with him or not) as a point of view they could empathize with, so violent as he may have been, there's an argument to be made that he deserves a place in that afterlife as well.

Only time will tell what the folks behind Black Panther 2 intend to do with Erik Killmonger. Marvel has a lot of unusual characters in its ever-growing library, but Howard the Duck is among the weirdest. Introduced to the comics in 1973, the anthropomorphic waterfowl is best known for leading his own live action movie in 1986, which is generally considered to be all kinds of terrible. However, Howard earned a little cinematic redemption when he cameoed in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy (voiced by Seth Green), and he briefly returned again for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 three years later. As it turns out, there were also plans for Howard the Duck to also pop in for Avengers: Infinity War, as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, would have sought him out for help. Infinity War co-director Joe Russo explained the idea as follows:

Yeah, it was [Peter] Quill trying to track down some information from Howard the Duck on some outlier planet and interrupting him during a poker game.

From what little we've seen of Howard the Duck so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, seeing him in a poker game sounds about right. Not only that, but this Howard moment would have also included The Hangover star Ken Jeong, who previously worked with the Russo brothers on Community and would presumably have been playing one of the other players at the space poker table. In the end, though, as Anthony Russo told Fandom, this "much beloved scene" was tossed out of one of the Avengers: Infinity War script drafts because it "didn't end up fitting at all." That was the same thing that happened with a planned appearance from Cosmo the space dog, another unusual Marvel character who previously cameoed in Guardians of the Galaxy.

When we first met Howard the Duck in Guardians of the Galaxy, he was imprisoned in The Collector's collection on Knowhere, but he was freed from captivity when the Power Stone blew up the museum, though he decided to stick around and enjoy a drink in the rubble. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Howard was seen on Contraxia at the same bar where Yondu and his Ravagers clan were hanging out. Whether or not Howard reappears in the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or another movie remains to be seen, though Lea Thompson mentioned a few months back that she was visiting Marvel to pitch a new Howard the Duck movie. In any case, now that we know that Howard could have shown up in Avengers: Infinity War, I'm concerned about whether or not the wise-cracking bird survived the Thanos snap.

Avengers: Infinity War is now available on Digital HD, and you can pick up your Blu-ray and DVD copies starting tomorrow, August 14. The MCU has wrapped up 2018 on the theatrical side of things, but it will pick back up next year when Captain Marvel is released on March 8, 2019, followed by Avengers 4 on May 3 and Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5.

Nick Furys last course of action before being dusted at the shocking end of Infinity War was to call on Carol Danvers. But before we could witness her join the Avengers in the battle against Thanos, fans were treated to her origin story. Captain Marvel was a $1.1 billion box office success about the titular hero and grunge looked good on her!

Now that the movie has made its way to home release, she has her own Honest Trailer and its a particularly hilarious episode that targets all the 90s set pieces, just how emotional Carol is and Fury and Gooses relationship. Take a look:

The trailer starts off just as Captain Marvel does, with that heartbreaking tribute to Stan Lee as Epic Voice Guy John Bailey gets a bit emotional. Since this movie was the first MCU flick since the comic book legends passing, it really turned up our tears by featuring his cameos instead of the heroes as the Marvel logo hit screens. Lees actual cameo in the film was also a sweet one that involved Captain Marvel flashing a smile at him before her train fight sequence.

The video moves into making jabs at the confusing distinction as to who the first avenger is. Its technically Captain America, but the name Avenger was Carols call sign and Furys inspiration to start the team. As the voiceover guy starts to get confused between the generations of heroes before her, he settles on shes the 90s one! Itll get back to that though.

First, the Honest Trailer points out how just about every character tells her to keep her emotions in check when shes clearly not much of an emotional type. As they say: she likes to keep it in neutral. After showing a series of scenes with Carol emoting some flat reponses, the commentary jokingly tells her to calm down.

Maybe its because she had amnesia, or because the Kree she was dealing with just werent used to dealing with humans in general. They got lucky though, because Carol doesnt break down or get too angry the whole film.

The video also characterizes Jude Laws Yon Rogg as her problematic Yoda and Lashana Lynchs Maria, who is her Marvel issued black friend. With the exception of Black Panther, just about every MCU movie has one black character in a supporting role, so it's a solidi call out.

Another jab is at Annette Benings character who is a bit muddled as both Dr. Lawson and the Supreme Intelligence. Nick Fury steals the show but the trailer also points out how some scenes cant quite mask the fact that Sam L. Jackson is 71 years old.

A great segment in the video goes deeply into the 90s references in Captain Marvel, which are a bit forced. The movie includes Blockbuster, Alta Vista, Street Fighter 2, Gameboy, Trolls, Mallrats, Nerf guns, Nine Inch Nails, Radio Shack to name a few.

To close out, Honest Trailers point out how next to other female superhero origin stories made in the past (besides Wonder Woman of course), its Citizen Fucking Kane, poking fun at the trolls who were against the film due to its female protagonist. Theyve been keeping track and theres still over 50 more films with a male superhero at the center.

As tradition goes, the movie gets its own Honest Trailer title which is Brie Kree Phone Home. Anyone else want to just call it that from now on?

Captain Marvel is now available to own on Digital and Blu-Ray.
